結成10周年を迎え、ベストアルバム『10 BABYMETAL YEARS」をリリースするBABYMETALグローバルアーティストとしてブレイクするきっかけとなった「ギミチョコ!!」をはじめ、これまでのミュージックビデオやライブ映像作品について、BABYMETAL、プロデューサーのKOBAMETAL、BABYMETALの振り付けを手がけるMIKIKOMETALによる「10 VIDEO SELECTIONS」を届ける!

BABYMETAL celebrates their 10th anniversary with the release of the Best Album “10 BABYMETAL YEARS”, and considering the Music Video of “Gimme Choco!!” helped lead to their global breakthrough, now is a good time to revisit the various music videos and other video performances with BABYMETAL, their producer KOBAMETAL, and their choreographer MIKIKOMETAL in this special “10 Video Selections” interview!

MV「ド・キ・ド・キ☆モーニング」 2012.11.8公開

Music Video: “Doki Doki☆Morning” (released November 8th, 2012)

撮影のときのことは覚えていますか。

Do you remember filming this video?

SU-METAL めちゃめちゃ覚えてます！けっこう小さいスタジオで撮影したので、3人が寝転がる振りのシーンで横に寝転がれなくて、縦に寝転がるっていう(笑)。空き時間にみんなでベッドに寝転んで遊んだり、部屋にあるものを使って遊んでいたら「それ、いいじゃん!」って感じでアイデアが採用されたりして。

SU-METAL: Quite clearly! We shot this video in a small studio, so when we lay down, we couldn’t lie down horizontally, and thus had to do so vertically (laughs). During our free time, we’d play on the bed together, and with the various things in the room. We came up with various ideas there on the fly.

セットのコンセプトはなんですか。

What was the concept of this set?

SU-METAL なんだろう......? 子ども番組みたいな感じだなと思いました。ダンスの面では、ものすごくがんばってメタルをやろうとしてる感が今見るとめちゃめちゃかわいいなと思っていて(笑)。当時はヘドバン (頭を激しく上下に振る動作)なんて一切やったことがなくて、横に振っているんですよね。これは「ベビーヘドバン」(MIKIKOMETAL命名)っていうみたいです(笑)。あと、 最初のポーズも、とりあえず首を上げればカッコよく見えると思っていたみたいで、MOAMETALなんて首が取れそうなぐらい上を向いているんですよ(笑)。

SU-METAL: Hm, what was the concept indeed? I thought it was kind of like a children’s show. In terms of dance, it’s really cute now to see how hard we were trying to be “metal”. At the time, we’d never done headbanging before, so we were shaking our heads sideways. That’s how the so-called “Babymetal Headbang” (as named by MIKIKOMETAL) came to be (laughs). Also, for the first pose, we thought it would be cool if we raised our heads, and MOAMETAL was looking up so high, it was like her head was going to fall off (laughs).

MV「いいね!」 2012.11.8公開

Music Video: “Iine!” (released November 8th, 2012)

MOAMETAL この曲はエキストラさんに入ってもらってミュージックビデオを撮影したんですよ。その人たちはもちろん BABYMETALのことは知らないし、エキストラとして来てくださったんですけど、その人たちの前で実際にライブをして、徐々に盛り上がってくれている感じがいつものライブと近くて、すごく楽しかった記憶があります。ダンスパフォーマンスがメインのビデオだったので、何度も踊って、カメラにアピールしたり、ちっちゃいなりに一生懸命がんばってつくったミュージックビデオです。途中で、ひとりずつ小さいステージが用意されて、エキストラの方々に囲まれる形でパフォーマンスするシーンがあるんですけど、ここで初めて360度ステージを体験しました。これがあったから後に武道館のステージが生まれたのかもしれない(笑)。

MOAMETAL: There were a lot of extras involved in the shooting of the Music Video. Of course, they didn’t know about BABYMETAL at all, and were actors, but we performed for real in front of them, and I remember that it was really fun to see them gradually getting excited, almost like a normal live performance. Since the main part of the video is a dance performance, I danced and appealed to the camera many times, and despite my smallness, I did my very best to create this music video. In the middle of the video, there’s a scene where each of us is surrounded by extras on a small stage, and that’s where I experienced a 360-degree stage for the first time. It’s probably because of this that the Budokan stage was born later (laughs).

あはは! あの武道館公演の原型が実はここに(笑)。

Ahaha! So this was the prototype for the Budokan shows (laughs).

MOAMETAL あと、衣装チェンジもあったんですけど、ラップパートは朝一番に撮影したので、朝のテンションでノリノリで楽しかった記憶があります。若いから朝は強くて。

MOAMETAL: Also, because there’s a costume change in the video, we shot the rap part first thing in the morning, and I remember it was fun to get the day started with this kind of hype. Generally speaking, we were good at starting at early hours*.

(*T/N: Interestingly, in earlier interviews, Moa has mentioned that she isn’t really a morning person, and tends to be fairly grumpy for awhile after waking up)

この衣装もすごいですよね。

That was quite the outfit!

MOAMETAL 私たちなりのラッパーです(笑)。

MOAMETAL: We became BABYMETAL-style rappers (laughs).

MV「ヘドバンギャー!!」 2012.11.8公開

Music Video: “Headbanger!!” (released November 8th, 2012)

SU-METAL がっつり演技をするのはこれが初めてで。どうしたらいいのか全然わからなくて、「とりあえずなんとなくやってみて」って言われて、「え、なんとなくってどうやってやるんですか......?」みたいな(笑)。「ここでこういうふうな感じでやってみて」と指示もふんわりしていたので、がんばって理解して必死にやりました。でも、演技シーンの撮影が押してしまって、MOAMETAL と YUIMETALがバッチリメイクした状態で私のことをずっと待っていたんですけど、ふたりを見た瞬間に「え、誰!?」って(笑)。

SU-METAL: This was the first time I’d done a full acting performance. I didn’t know what to do at all, and they just told me, “just kind of try things out”, and I was like, “Uh, how exactly do you just try it out?” (laughs) The instructions were so vague, and they’d go, “try to do something like this here”, so I tried my best to understand them and did my best. But we took so long to shoot the acting scene that MOAMETAL and YUIMETAL waited for me in full makeup for hours, and the moment I saw them I was like, “Wha- who are you!?” (laughs)

ここではしっかりヘドバンしていますね。

You got quite the solid headbanging going on.

SU-METAL 首にコルセットをした状態でどうやってヘドバンしたらいいのかわからなくて。そもそも、コルセットって首が動かないようにするためのものじゃないですか(笑)。だから、「首を振ってください」って言われても動かない(笑)。

SU-METAL: I didn’t know how to headbang with a neck brace on. To begin with, a neck brace is supposed to keep your neck from moving, isn’t it? (laughs) So even if they told me to shake my head, I couldn’t really do it (laughs).

当時は、コルセットを巻くのがX JAPANのYOSHIKIさんオマージュということもわからなかったわけですよね

At the time, you were probably unaware that the neck brace was a tribute to Yoshiki of X Japan, right?

SU-METAL そもそも、コルセットというものの存在をこのときに初めて知りました。あと、アンプが並んでて、ちょっとモノクロな感じになっているのもカッコいいですよね。メイクの感じもそうですけど、ちょっと大人になった気分でうれしかったです。

SU-METAL: To begin with, it was the first time I’d ever learned of a neck brace. It was also cool to see the amps lined up in a somewhat monochromatic way. Like the makeup, having an elaborate set for shooting helped make me feel like an adult, which made me happy.

アンプが積まれている画も、今のほうがよりカッコよさがわかるんじゃな いですか。

I suppose you understand the coolness of the scene composed of stacked amps a lot better now?

SU-METAL あ、そうかもしれないですね! あのときは「おお~!」っていう感じだったけど、今はアンプがどういうものなのかちゃんと理解しているので。

SU-METAL: Oh, I think you’re right! At the time, I was sort of in awe, and all I could manage was, “Oh~!” but now I really know what an amplifier is.

ほかに撮影時のエピソードってありますか。

Are there any other stories from the shooting of this video?

SU-METAL この曲って1曲踊るとけっこうヘロヘロになるんですよ。でも、ミュージックビデオって何回も踊るじゃないですか。だから、一度踊ってヘロヘロになってまた踊ってっていう繰り返しで。当時は力の抜き方もわからなかったので、全部のカットが全力で、私がちょっとだけ映り込むようなシーンでも全カだったのでめちめちゃ疲れていました(笑)。

SU-METAL: It’s pretty exhausting to dance to this song even once. But when we shot the music video, we had to do it over and over again! So we danced, got exhausted, and then danced again. At the time, I didn’t know how to pace myself properly, so I went all-out for every take, even in scenes when I was only in the background for a bit, so I was totally spent (laughs).

MV「イジメ、ダメ、ゼッタイ」 2012.11.27公開

SU-METAL このMVはどこかの洞窟みたいなところで撮ったんですよ。

SU-METAL: We shot this Music Video in a cave somewhere!

あ、セットじゃないんですね。

Ah, it wasn’t a set, was it?

SU-METAL 本当に洞窟だったんです。後日、セットに刺さっていた「燃えるフライングV」(ギター) をCD購入者へプレゼントしたのを覚えています。フライングVをしっかり見たことがそれまでになくて、すごくカッコいいなと思いましたね。だって、洞窟にフライングVが刺さっているだけでちゃんとしたセットになるんですよ(笑)。後ろにある崖もリアルなものだし、足元が石でゴロゴロしていたのでめちゃめちゃ踊りにくかったです。だから、走るときに「転ばないでよ!」って言われながらやっていました。

SU-METAL: It was an actual cave! I remember that we later gave away the “Flaming Flying V” guitars as part of a set to a few lucky fans that had bought the CD. I had never seen a Flying V up close before, and I thought it was super cool. Just sticking a few Flying Vs in a cave made for a proper set (laughs). The walls behind us were also very real, and it was hard to dance because the ground was strewn with stones. So when we were running, they kept telling us “don’t trip and fall!”

ギターソロのシーンもカッコいいですよね。

The guitar solo scene is also very cool.

SU-METAL ああ、そうですね! そういうギターソロのシーンがよくあるのは知っていたので。

SU-METAL: Oh, that’s right! I know there are often scenes with guitar solos like that.

演技指導みたいなものはあったんですか。

Did they give you acting instructions?

SU-METAL 映像を見て、「ギターソロってこういう感じだよ」って教えてもらって。

SU-METAL: We watched videos, and they taught us, “this is what guitar solos should look like”.

ちゃんとそれっぽいですよね。

It does look pretty good.

SU-METAL ギターのフレーズに合わせて弾き方も再現しているから本当にすごいと思う。

SU-METAL: I think it’s really great, because it reproduces the way you play along with guitar phrases.

これ、ちゃんと再現してるんですか！？

Are you sure you recreated it properly?

SU-METAL 実際に弾き方の練習もしたみたいです。ここでふたりが背中を合わせて弾いているシーンは、今、神バンドのみなさんがやっているような動きにつながっているんです。

SU-METAL: They actually practiced how to play it. The scene where the two of them play back to back is connected to something the Kami Band does now.

ライブ映像作品『LIVE~LEGEND I, D, Z APOCALYPSE～』 2013.11.20発売

Live performance: “Live~ Legend I, D, Z Apocalypse~” (released November 20th, 2013)

こちらは 2012年10月6日Shibuya O-EASTで開催された「LEGEND "I"」と 2012年12月20日の Akasaka BLITZ「LEGEND “D” SU-METAL聖誕祭」を収録しています。

This video is a recording of “Legend I” held at Shibuya O-EAST on October 6th, 2012, and “Legend ‘D’ SU-METAL’s Birthday Festival” at Akasaka BLITZ on December 20th, 2012.

MOAMETAL これはですね、神バンドさんが初めて参加してくれたライブで、私はその記憶でいっぱいです。私にとって初めての生バンドだったので、最初にリハーサルをしたときが衝撃的でした。神バンドさんから衝撃を受けて、リハーサルを重ねたことを踏まえてこの映像を見ると、まだあどけないというか、自分で見ていてもかわいらしいですね。まだなりきれてないというか、神バンドさんの音に一生懸命合わせている様子がかわいいなって思います(笑)。

MOAMETAL: This was the first time we’d performed live with the Kami Band, and remember this aspect of the show most clearly. Since it was the first time with a live band, the initial rehearsal was quite shocking. When I watch the videos, I can still remember the sense of astonishment, and us rehearsing over and over again. Even I find it rather endearing to see how naive and cute we were, particularly how we all gave it everything we had to match the power of the band (laughs).

一生懸命合わせているというのは見ていてわかるものなんですね。

It’s easy to see how hard you were trying to make it work.

MOAMETAL やってる側からするとわかりますね。ほかのスタッフさんに聞くと、「意外と変わらないね」と言ってくださることもあるんですけど、私からすると相当踊り方が変わっているし、今とは全然違うものとして見てしまいます。

MOAMETAL: I can see it more easily because we were the ones performing. When I ask the staff, they sometimes say “surprisingly, you haven’t changed at all” - but from my perspective, the way we dance has changed considerably, and I feel it’s completely different now.

MV「メギツネ」 2013.6.5公開

Music Video: “Megitsune” (released June 5th, 2013)

MOAMETAL この撮影はすごく記憶に残っていますね。神社という神聖な場所で撮影させてもらったし、特に印象に残っています。あと、お屋敷でも撮影をさせてもらって、お手玉のシーンとか、日本らしさを詰め込んだミュージックビ デオになっているので、海外の人たちからしたら新鮮でおもしろいんだろうなと思います。でも、ダンスシーンの撮影で実は衣装を破ってしまったんですよ。そこまで激しいダンスだと思わずに作っていただいた衣装だったので、「まさか途中で糸がほつれるなんて......!」という驚きをみなさんに与えた撮影でした。

MOAMETAL: I remember this shoot very clearly. We were able to film in a sacred shrine, and that left a particularly strong impression on me. We also filmed in a large traditional residence, and the music video was filled with Japanese elements, such as the scene where we played with odetama handballs, so I think it would be novel and interesting for people from overseas. However, I actually tore my costume while shooting the dance scene. They probably didn’t anticipate that the dance would be so intense, so everyone was surprised to see the threads had loose in the middle of shooting!

どうやって対応したんですか。

How did you handle it?

MOAMETAL すぐに布を継ぎ足して縫ってもらったんですけど、縫い直しても違う場所がどんどんほつれていったので、最後のほうはそのままにしていました。あと、ミュージックビデオ用につけた振り付けがあるんですよ。間奏部分は今踊っているのと振りが違うので、よく見たら気づくと思います。たまにミュージックビデオ用の振り付けを踊れるか確認するんですけど、まだ踊れたので機会があったらライブでやってみたいですね。

MOAMETAL: I immediately had the fabric sewn back on, but even after re-sewing, the fabric kept coming undone in different places, so towards the end we just rolled with it as it was. Also, we adjusted some of the choreography for the music video. In the interlude, the dance is a bit different from our current choreography, and you’ll notice it if you watch carefully. Sometimes I like to check and see if I can still do the music video version, and I’d love to do this variation during a live performance if the opportunity arises.

途中、MOAMETALさんが滑っているシーン (2:30) がありますよね。

MOAMETAL actually slips somewhere in the middle of the song (2:30), right?

MOAMETAL 滑っています。廊下でガチで滑っているシーンが使われているんですよ。キレイに滑りました。

MOAMETAL: I did slip! They used a shot where I slipped in the hallway, and made it look so smooth.

仕上がりを見ていかがでしたか。

How did you like the finished video?

MOAMETAL すごくカッコよくてびっくりしました。私の中で「ザ・ミュージックビデオ」って感じがしたんですよね。「メギツネ」という曲の世界観をしっかり表現できていると思うし、見ていてシンプルにおもしろいと思ったかな。あと、細かいポイントなんですけど、SU-METALのマイクが刀になっていたり、本当に細かいところまで日本らしさを追求しているから、海外の人がこのビデオをきっかけに日本に興味を持ってもらえたらいいなと思います。

MOAMETAL: I was really surprised at how cool it was, and it really felt like “the” Music Video to me. I think it expresses the message of “Megitsune” very well, and it’s also just very interesting to watch. There are also some minor points, such as the fact that SU-METAL’s microphone is a dagger, and the video goes out of its way to pursue and incorporate Japanese elements down to the smallest detail, so I hope that people from overseas will become interested in Japan because of this video.

実際、大人気曲になりましたね。

As a matter of fact, it did become very popular.

MOAMETAL ありがたいですね。今でも着物を着てステージに登場すると歓声が上がるので、日本らしさって大事だなって思います。

MOAMETAL: I’m very grateful for that! We still get cheers when we appear on stage wearing a kimono, so I think it’s important to retain Japanese elements.

MV「KARATE」2016.3.18公開

Music Video: “Karate” (released March 18th, 2016)

MOAMETAL すごく覚えてます。「KARATE」のミュージックビデオ撮影は何度もダンスシーンを撮り直したし、撮影前日までかなり振りをそろえまくりましたね。その集大成がここに詰まっています。ほかの楽曲のダンスシーンの撮影でもキレイに振りを整えるんですけど、こんなにそろえたことはないんじゃないかっていうぐらい、リハーサルをしまくりました。そのおかげで、この時期からどんどん振りがそろうようになっていってるんですよ。このときの経験がほかの楽曲にも活かされているので、このときに無理してでもがんばってよかったです。

MOAMETAL: I remember this one quite clearly too. While filming the Music Video for “Karate”, we reshot the dance scenes many times, and we had practiced the choreography over and over again to make sure our moves matched each other perfectly, until the day before the shoot. It was the culmination of our efforts! When we film dance scenes for other songs, we also make sure to get the choreography right, but we rehearsed for this one more than we’d ever done before. Thanks to that, our choreography was much more aligned. I’m glad that we pushed ourselves so hard at the time, because the experience we gained was utilized in other songs.

じっくり取り組めたんですね。

You were able to take your time and get everything right.

MOAMETAL 細かいところまで直して。この曲のテーマが「自分との闘い」だったので、それを象徴していた期間かもしれないですね。

MOAMETAL: We fixed every little detail. The theme of the song is “fighting with yourself”, so it may have also been rather symbolic.

たしかに、ダンスはキレイですよね。だからこそ、シンプルな構成でも映像作品として成立したところはあるかもしれないですね。

But the dance is indeed tight and sharp, isn’t it? That’s probably why the simple structure of the video works so well.

MOAMETAL そうですね。ごまかせる要素がなかったので、シンプル・イズ・ベストで闘えているところはあります。

MOAMETAL: I agree. There was nowhere to cheat, so we just proceeded to take on this challenge with a “the simpler the better” approach.

そして、硬派なビデオに見えて、瓦割り、バット蹴り、そしてハエを箸で捕まえるシーンがあるという。

And although it’s quite a hardcore video at first glance, it includes scenes of breaking tiles, kicking bats, and even catching flies with chopsticks*.

(*T/N: Moa actually catches the fly with her bare hands in the video, but it says chopsticks in this interview)

MOAMETAL そうなんですよ。おもしろい要素もカッコよく追求するっていうのはBABYMETALらしくていいと思います。

MOAMETAL: That’s right. Pursuing interesting elements in a cool way - it’s very BABYMETAL, and I love it.

MOAMETALさんはオチみたいな扱いになっていますけど。

MOAMETAL is kind of treated like a punchline, though.

MOAMETAL 本当ですよね。私、ハエをつかむキャラになっていて、ツアー中の楽屋に虫が出ると、「MOAMETAL、出番だよ」って言われて、いつも私が退治する役目を担っています。このときから私の担当に。

MOAMETAL: I know! I’ve become “the one who grabs flies”, and when insects appear in the dressing room while we’re touring, they always say, “MOAMETAL, here’s your time to shine” and I’m in charge of catching them. It became my job ever since.

このときから (笑)。ハエは実際に捕まえてるわけではないですけど、どういう意識で動いていたんですか。

Ever since (laughs).  You didn’t actually catch a fly, but what were you thinking while doing it?

MOAMETAL 「周りにいっぱいハエが飛んでるイメージで獲ってください」って言われて(笑)。撮影の前にジャッキー・チェンの映画を見ながら勉強して、自分でも「何を勉強してるんだ......」って思いながらやっていました。

MOAMETAL: Well, they asked me to imagine that there were a lot of flies flying around (laughs). Before filming, I watched Jackie Chan movies for reference, and thought to myself “what the hell am I studying”.

MV 「Starlight」2018.10.19公開

Music Video: “Starlight” (released October 19th, 2018)

これは本人が出演していないビデオですね。

You didn’t actually appear in this Music Video, did you?

SU-METAL いや、実は最後にちょっとだけ出演しているという。

SU-METAL: Well actually, I appeared at the very end.

ああ、あの集合カットのなかにいるんですね！

Ah, you were in that group shot!

SU-METAL はい、実はほんのちょっとだけ。

SU-METAL: Yup, though only for a little bit.

真ん中にいるのがSU-METALさんですか。

Is that SU-METAL in the very middle?

SU-METAL そうです。どれくらいの人が気づいてるのかわからないけど、実は本人です(笑)。

SU-METAL: Yup. I don’t know how many people are aware of it, but that is indeed me (laughs).

このMVをどう解釈していますか。

How do you interpret this Music Video?

SU-METAL 曲の話になってしまうんですけど、「Starlight」って、YUIMETALという大切な仲間を失ってしまって、どうしたらいいんだろう、どうやって前に進んだらいいんだろうって嘆いている曲だと思っていたんですよ。だから、歌いはじめたころはひとりで叫んでいるという解釈をしていたんですけど、ライブを重ねていく中でその解釈が少しずつ変わってきて。すごく包まれている感覚というか。星って無数にあるじゃないですか。だから、そこにいなくてもつながっているし、見守ってくれているし、包んでくれているし、たくさんの人が自分のことを守ってくれているんだなという解釈に変わってきて。だから、最初はひとりで叫ぶための高音だったものが、今はしっかり遠くまで届けるためのものに変わっていきました。

SU-METAL: I thought of “Starlight” as a song lamenting the loss of our important friend YUIMETAL, wondering what to do and how to move forward. So when I first started singing it, I interpreted it as me shouting by myself, but as we performed the song more and more, that interpretation gradually changed. It feels like I’m wrapped up in it. There are countless stars, aren’t there? So even if someone’s not there, we’re connected. They’re watching over and embracing us. As such, my interpretation has changed, to recognize the many people protecting me. At first, I used the high note at the beginning of the song and chorus to shout and scream in solitude, but now it has transformed into one that conveys the message of the song far and wide.

それ、こちらにも伝わっています。おっしゃるように「Starlight」って最初のころに比べるとライブでの印象が変わったと感じていて、本当に包み込まれるような感覚になるというか。それはSU-METALさんの解釈の変化が生んだものなのかもしれないですね。

I can feel it in my heart. As you said, I feel “Starlight” gives off a different impression in live performances compared to the first time we heard it, and it really makes you feel as if you’re being enveloped. Perhaps that’s the result of SU-METAL’s new interpretation.

SU-METAL そうですね。そのとき自分がいた場所によって解釈が変わっていった曲のひとつです。

SU-METAL: I think so. It’s one of those songs where my interpretation changed depending on where I was at the time.

このストーリーはどういうものなんですか。

What’s the story behind this?

SU-METAL 「Distortion」という荒廃した世界から「Starlight」「Shine」「Arkadia」〈光3部作〉という流れでループしているイメージなんです。破壊と創造、輪廻転生みたいな。あとは受け取った方がどう感じるかだと思います。

SU-METAL: It’s an image of a loop from the desolate world of “Distortion”, from which arises “Starlight”, “Shine”, and “Arkadia” (the Trilogy of Lights). It’s like destruction and creation; reincarnation. I think it’s up to the audience to decide how they feel about it.

たしかに、楽曲も映像もその人が受け取ったものが正解なのかもしれないですね。

It’s true that the correct answer to a song or video resides in what the viewer receives in their heart.

SU-METAL そうですね。「Starlight」の光も、たったひとつの光なのか、数あるうちのひとつなのか、見え方によって変わってくるし、置かれている環境によっても違うし、私も自分自身の環境の変化を経たこともあって曲の解釈が変わっていったから、「このタイミングではこう思ったけど、今聴いたらこういうメッセージも含まれてるのかな?」って人によっては感じることがあると思います。BABYMETALの曲って、そうやってあとづけされていく意味がたくさんあるし、みなさんのなかで育っていく曲なんだと思います。

SU-METAL: Indeed. The light in “Starlight” changes depending on how you look at it, whether it’s just one light or many, and it also changes depending on your environment. I’ve also changed my interpretation of songs as my environment changes, so some people might feel, “This is what it meant to me at the time, but if I listen to it now, a different message appears.” BABYMETAL’s songs have a lot of meanings that are added in this way, and I think they are songs that grow on you.

Live Performance: “Live at the Forum” (released May 13th, 2020)

2019年10月11日に米・ロサンゼルスで行われたBABYMETAL初の北米アリーナ公演「METAL GALAXY WORLD TOUR LIVE AT THE FORUM」を収録しています。

This video is a recording of BABYMETAL’s first North American arena show, “Metal Galaxy World Tour Live at the Forum”, which took place in Los Angeles, California (U.S.A.) on October 11th, 2019.

MOAMETAL 最近のライブなのでフォーラムはけっこう記憶に新しいです。以前にこの会場でライブを見たことがあるので、「このステージに立てるんだ」っていう喜びがかなりありました。しかも、アメリカツアーの集大成というか、そこまでツアーで培ったものを活かせるタイミングだったのでドキドキしていましたね。アメリカのこんなに大きな会場に人が集まってくれたことが素直にうれしかったかな。

MOAMETAL: It was fairly recent, so The Forum is still quite fresh in my mind. I had attended live shows at this venue before, so I was really happy to be able to stand upon the same stage. Moreover, it was the culmination of the U.S. tour, and a great opportunity to make use of what we had built up throughout the tour, so I was very excited. I was overjoyed that people gathered at such a big venue in America.

すごい盛り上がりでしたよね。

It was a lot of fun, wasn’t it?

MOAMETAL はい、でも私はすごく冷静だった記憶があります。アメリカツアーを経て吸収したものを出し切りたいっていうことを考えながらやっていた かもしれないです。

MOAMETAL: Yes, but I remember feeling very calm. I think I was thinking about how I wanted to bring out everything I had absorbed over the course of the tour.

ウェンブリー・アリーナ公演もそうでしたけど、アルバム発売日で、初披露の曲もあって、こんなに大舞台に立つという、すごくプレッシャーがかかるような大変なことをよくやっているなと思いました。

As was the case for the Wembley Arena performance, the show marked the day of a new album release, so some of the songs were being performed for the very first time. I thought you did a great job performing on such a big stage, which is a very difficult thing to do, and must have been quite nerve wracking.

MOAMETAL 本当ですか?(笑)。でも、「DA DA DANCE」に関してはアメリカツアーに行く1週間前ぐらいから曲を入れていって、ツアーを回りながらずっと練習をしていたんですよ。実際の会場を使って練習を重ねていたので、私の中ではそんなに初披露という感覚はなかったです。

MOAMETAL: Ah, really? (laughs) But regarding “DA DA DANCE”, we added the song to our routine about a week before we set out for the U.S., and practiced it constantly while on tour. We had been practicing in actual venues, so it didn’t really feel like the first time for me.

やっぱり、スタジオで合わせるのとはまた違うんですね。

It’s quite different from the studio version, isn’t it?

MOAMETAL 違いますね。スタジオは鏡がある状態だけど、鏡がないステージで披露する感覚は全然違うし、会場によって床の作りも違うし、そういうことをいろんな場所で経験していたから、フォーラムでもちゃんとした形で残せたんだと思います。

MOAMETAL: Very different! We have mirrors in the studio, so the feeling of performing on a stage without them is completely different. The flooring varies between venues, so I think we were able to leave a proper impression on The Forum because we had experienced all these things in various places before.

数あるステージのひとつみたいな感覚で立てた。

It was like standing upon one of the many stages you had overcome before.

MOAMETAL そうですね、だから変に気負いもせずにできた気がします。あと、「Shine」に関してはこの日が3人バージョンの初披露で、この曲も何度も練習していたので、ツアーを通して培ったものをしっかり出せたと思います。

MOAMETAL: Yes, that’s why we were able to do it without being overwhelmed. Also, it was the first time we performed “Shine” with three people, and we had practiced the song so many times. So I think we really did demonstrate all that we had learned on the tour.

でも、こういう大きな会場だと、もっと曲が浸透した状態でファンに見せたいという気持ちになりませんか。

But in such a large venue, don’t you feel like you want to show the fans the song under more familiar circumstances?

MOAMETAL 意外と関係ないかもしれないです。どの曲も新鮮な気持ちでできているし、毎回SU-METALと話し合って、どこを楽しむかっていうことを決めたりしているので、ステージの大きさは全然関係ないですね。

MOAMETAL: Surprisingly, it doesn’t really make a difference. Every song is performed with a fresh feeling, and every time we perform, I talk with SU-METAL and decide what we want to enjoy this time, so the size of the stage doesn’t matter at all.

Live Performance: “Legend Metal Galaxy” (released September 9th, 2020)

ライブ作品としては最新作になります。映像は2020年1月25・26日に開催された幕張メッセ2DAYS 「METAL GALAXY WORLD TOUR IN JAPAN EXTRA SHOW LEGEND - METAL GALAXY」を収録しています。2日間で約5万人(各日約25000人)が目撃しました。

This is the latest of your live performances; the video contains the 2 days of the “Metal Galaxy World Tour in Japan Extra Show - Legend Metal Galaxy”, held at Makuhari Messe on January 25th and 26th, 2020. Around 50,000 people (25,000 each day) attended these concerts.

SU-METAL すごいですよね、これ。巨大スクリーンもあったし、アベンジャーズの方々とかバンドさんとか、いろんな方の力を借りて、今、BABYMETALができるすべてをこのライブで出し尽くしたんじゃないかと思っています。このライブが日本でできる人はほかにいないと思うし、BABYMETALでこれ以上のことをやれといわれても何をやればいいんだろう? っていう感じになってしまうぐらい迫力があるし、すべての魅力が詰まっている気がします。例えば、大きい会場だとBABYMETALのストーリー性を見せられるぶん、ライブハウスに比べて熱量が下がってしまうというところがあるけど、ここではオールスタンディングだからこその熱量と迫力がある。1日目と2日目でまったくセットリストが違うということにも、私自身すごく驚きました。さっきも曲の解釈の話をしましたけど、私は毎回、ライブをするたびに「BABYMETALの曲ってこういうものなんだ!」って新たに学ばせてもらっていて、その感覚が如実に現れたというか。1日目のライブですでにすごいことをやったなと思ったはずなのに、2日目になったらゴリゴリのメタルになっていて、「あれ? これ、BABYMETALのライブだよね?」って思ったぐらい、自分がいたはずなのにすごく他人事のようにも感じていて、改めて「すごいことをしたな」と思っています。

SU-METAL: It was really amazing, wasn’t it? There was an enormous screen, and with the help of the Avengers, the Kami Band, and so many others, I think BABYMETAL gave it all we had in this performance. I don’t think there’s anyone else in Japan that can do what we did, and it raised the bar so high that it makes me wonder how we’ll surpass it. I feel like we packed in everything special about the band in this show. For example, you can tell the story of BABYMETAL in a big venue, but the level of hype tends to be lower than a smaller live house. Yet in this venue, everything was taken to the max, because it was all standing. I was also surprised when I found out the setlist would be completely different between Day 1 and 2. As I mentioned earlier regarding the interpretation of songs, every time we perform live, I learn something new about what a BABYMETAL song is really like. That was definitely the case here as well. I thought we’d already done something quite impressive on the first day, but on the second day, we cranked up the metal even further, and I thought “Whoa? This is a BABYMETAL concert, right?” It was almost like an out-of-body experience, and once again I felt that we had done something amazing.

この巨大スクリーンは、お客さんとメンバーで当然見え方が全然違うわけですよね。

As you might expect, the audience and the members of the band see the huge screen in a different way, right?

SU-METAL あ！ひとつ言いたいのが、この日、「Oh! MAJINAI (feat. Joakim Brodén)」を初披露して、スクリーンにヨアキムさんが出てきたじゃないですか。本当はダンスでいろいろなおもしろさを見せたいと考えていたんですけど、ヨアキムさんのインパクトがすごすぎて、私たちがヨアキムさんのバックダンサーになっちゃったんですよ(笑)。それがすごく悔しくて!(笑)。お客さんからはヨアキムさんが一番大きく見えるから、どうしてもそっちに目がいっちゃって、「みんな、めっちゃ笑ってるじゃん!」って(笑)。1日目にきたお客さんがみんなヨアキムさんのことを話題にしていたので、ヨアキムさんに嫉妬したんですよ! この曲は振りが けっこうハードだから、「ちょっとー、がんばったのにーっ!」って。あの日、どれぐらいの人が私たちのダンスを見ていたのかわからないですけど、ダンスもがんばってます! 映像だとちゃんと見られると思うのでチェックしていただきたいですね!

SU-METAL: Ah! One thing I wanted to mention is that we performed “Oh! MAJINAI” for the first time, and Mr. Joakim appeared on the screen. We wanted to show various interesting things through the choreography, but Joakim’s impact was so great that we ended up becoming his backup dancers (laughs). I was so frustrated! (laughs) From the audience’s point of view, Joakim was absolutely massive, so they couldn’t help but be drawn to him and kept smiling and laughing. I was jealous of Joakim because the fans who attended Day 1 kept talking about him, and because the choreography is quite difficult, I was like, “Hey wait a minute, I worked really hard too!” I don’t know how many people actually watched us dance that day, but we did our best regardless!
