原っぱだけが見えたので、「全然人いないね」って

From where we were, all we could see was the field. “No one came” we said to each other.

――メタルレジスタンス第2章は、2014年7月からの初のワールドツアーがスタート。巨大フェスへの出演やビッグネームのツアーサポート等、そこで体験したすべてが大きな糧となっていった。

The second chapter of Metal Resistance began its world tour in July 2014. BABYMETAL’s participation in huge festivals and performing as supporting acts for big names on tour would become important sustenance for the years to come

初めてのワールドツアーは、お客さんが一斉にカメラを手にして写真を撮っている画に驚くというところから始まりましたね。あとは、雰囲気的にドイツのゴリゴリのメタル感に圧倒されたり......睨んでるわけじゃないと思うんですけど、ステージに出ていった瞬間のみんなの視線がかなり強くて(笑)。でも、いざ曲が始まったら、一緒に”リンッリンッリンッ!”みたいな。「あっ、一緒に踊ってくれるんだ、かわいい」と思ったり(笑)。海外だと盛り上がってくると物がどんどん飛んできたりして、そういった部分でギャップは感じましたね。

During the first world tour, I was surprised to see so many people in the audience taking pictures of us, which was a bit surprising. I was also overwhelmed by the atmosphere of gory German metal… it’s not that people stared per se, but they’d definitely fix their eyes upon us intently the moment we stepped onto the stage (laughs). But when the song started, they were all going, “Ring Ring Ring!” and I thought, “Oh, they’re dancing with me! That’s so cute!*” In foreign shows, people throw things sometimes when they get excited, so that’s a noticeable difference.

(*Translator’s Note: it is difficult to translate in text the nuance of a young girl describing grown men as “cute/kawaii”. It’s a sort of uniquely Japanese thing, where to describe people in this way is not seen as demeaning or emasculating, but rather something that you appreciate.)

――そんななかでソニスフィア・フェスティバルUKでのライヴは、語り草となっているエポックメイキングなステージ。大物も名を連ねた巨大フェス出演について、本人はどう捉えていたのだろう?

The performance at the UK Sonisphere Festival is often seen as the moment BABYMETAL made themselves known to the world. What did she think about this appearance at such a huge festival featuring so many big names?

アウェーでも楽しめるようになったのは、もしかしたらあの時の経験が一番大きいのかなって思います。正直、ソニスフィアのことはメタルフェスであることは知ってたんですけど、規模感から何からまったく知らなかったんですね。だから、まず袖からステージを見て、「大きいね!」ってみんなでびっくりするところから始まって。それで、お客さんはいるのかな?って、もう一度袖からちょっと覗いてみたら、死角になっていたところがあったらしくて、そこからは全然観客の姿が見えなかったんです。原っぱだけが見えたので、「全然人いないね」って。でも、日本から10人くらいは来てくれてるはずだから、その人たちのために頑張ろうみたいなことを言ってステージに立ったんですよ。そうしたら、めちゃめちゃ人がいたので、そこにすごく驚いたという(笑)。人がいなくても頑張ろう、心折れずに頑張ろうと言ってステージに立ったので、まずは人がたくさんいる喜びを感じてましたね。

The Sonisphere experience is probably a big reason for why I enjoy performing abroad so much. To be honest, all I knew beforehand about Sonisphere was that it was a metal festival; I had no idea how big it was. So we started off looking at the stage from the wings and remarking in surprise, “It’s so big!” We wondered if there was an audience, and peeked out from the side - but there was a blind spot, so we couldn’t see the audience at all. From where we were, all we could see was the field. “No one came” we said to each other. But we figured there must be at least 10 diehard fans who’d traveled from Japan to see us, so we resolved to do our best anyway and put on a great show for these loyal fans. Then we stepped onto the stage, and were totally blindsided by how many people there were (laughs)! We had been ready to do our best without backing down even if there wasn’t a crowd, so when we got up there, it was a joy to see so many people waiting for us.

――何とも彼女たちらしい微笑ましいエピソードだが、あの大舞台であっても、こうしたある種の大らかさをもって臨んでいたからこそ世界を席巻していったのかも......などと思わされてしまう。

It’s a funny episode that’s quite fitting for BABYMETAL, but perhaps it was this magnanimity that has helped them dominate huge stages all over the world.

実際にステージに立ってみて、私たちのことが嫌いなのか、興味がない人もたくさんいるんだろうなって最初にわかったんですよ。そういう雰囲気でみんな観てるので。でも、パフォーマンスしているなかで、言葉じゃなくて音楽で通じ合えるところがあるんだなって感じられて、「あっ、BABYMETALの音楽って、こんなに力があるんだ」って思えたんです。反応が素直なので、いいね!と思ったらノリ始めるんですね。その波がどんどん広がっていく様子が本当に目に見えてわかったんですよ。あの時の経験は今に活きていますね。どれだけアウェーな場所に行っても、(ソニスフィアで)あれができたんだから、やれないはずはないだろうって。

When I actually stood on the stage, I realized that there were a lot of people that were uninterested, or even hostile towards us. That’s the kind of atmosphere it felt like at first. But as we performed, I felt that we were able to communicate through music, not words, and I felt, “So this is the power of BABYMETAL’s music!” The audience responded so honestly, and as they warmed up to us it felt like a wave of expanding music growing before my eyes. That experience has stayed with me even after all these years. Whatever unfamiliar place we take on next, I have no doubt we can succeed, because of our achievement at Sonisphere.

――さて、BABYMETALの歴史を振り返ると、第1章で触れたメタリカをはじめ、多くの海外アーティストとの出逢いがフェスなどで生まれている。そこで育まれた関係性が、後に巷をあっと驚かせる展開に結び付いていることは言うまでもない。

Looking back upon BABYMETAL’s history, festivals were where they met foreign artists like Metallica for the first time. Needless to say, the relationships nurtured there led to unexpected developments that have taken the world by storm.

バックヤードのケータリングの場所とかでかなり目立つんですよ、私たちって。メタルフェスで、小っちっい女の子たちがウロウロしてるってことが殆どないですからね。「メタルやってるの?」「君たちパフォーマーなの?」みたいなことを訊かれて、「そうだよ、何時からのステージだから、よかったら観てね」という感じで話したりするんですけど。なかには、振り付けが面白いねって言ってきて、「こんなやつだろ?」って真似してきたりとか(笑)。フェスに参加するといろんな人たちとの出逢いがたくさんあって、さらにそこから輪が広がっていくんだなってことは身に染みて感じているので。

It’s pretty noticeable in the backstage catering areas - it’s not like there are normally a lot of little girls hanging around at a metal festival. People were like, “You’re doing metal? You’re a performer?!” and I’d say, “That’s right, our show starts at this time, if you’re interested.” Some of them told us that “the choreography is interesting!”, and “so that’s what you guys do!” and even imitated our dancing! (laughs) You can meet a lot of people at a festival, and I’ve experienced firsthand how it can expand your circle of friends.

「道なき道を切り開く」という言葉もこの時があったから

We could say, “We’re going to blaze our own path”

――そんな怖いもの知らずの屈託のない立ち居振る舞いも目に浮かぶようだが、7月から8月にかけては、あのレディー・ガガの北米ツアーにサポートアクトとして帯同。当時、日本のワイドショー等でもニュースとなったが、SU-METALは当時をこう振り返る。

Their fearless demeanor was on full display as they performed as a support act for Lady Gaga’s North American tour from July to August, which made the Japanese news at the time. SU-METAL looks back upon those days with us.

現実のことと思えなくて、よくわからなかったですね(笑)。贅沢なことに自分たちのライヴが終わったら、毎日レディー・ガガさんのライヴを観られるんですよ。......なんですけど、私たちがその場にいること自体が不思議な感覚で、ツアー中ずっとお会いさせてもらっていたんですけど、結局それも今考えても夢みたいだなって。

It all felt pretty surreal (laughs). We had the luxury of being able to watch Lady Gaga’s performance every day after our show. It was such a strange and unbelievable feeling to have this opportunity; to be able to work with her all throughout the tour. Even now, it still somehow feels like a dream.

でも、学んだことはとてもたくさんありました。まず、ライヴの環境が私たちにとって初めて遭遇するものだったんですよ。砂漠のエリアや標高が高いエリアとか、そういう今までまったくライヴをしたことがない場所だったので、身体が初めての感覚に陥ってしまって。喉の乾燥具合が普通じゃなかったり、うまく息ができないといったことも初めての経験でした。BABYMETALは5曲だったからライヴができてましたけど、当時はあれ以上の曲数だったら無理だったと思うし、ああいう環境で毎日あれだけのライヴをやっているレディー・ガガさんには心からリスペクトしてましたね。とにかくガガさんは本当に優しくて、私たちのライヴを何度も観てくださったり、本番前の忙しいタイミングのはずなのに気さくに接してくださったりして、いい思い出しかないです。

We learned so much - first of all, the show’s environment was something we’d never encountered before. We’d never played in a desert area or at high altitude, and so on, so it was something our bodies experienced for the first time. My throat felt unusually dry, and I couldn’t breathe well. BABYMETAL only performed 5 songs in each set, so we were able to perform live, but it would have been impossible to do more. I really respected Lady Gaga for being able to perform so many shows day after day in that kind of environment. She was so kind, watched our performances many times, and was so friendly despite being so busy before the show. I have nothing but fond memories of Lady Gaga!

さらにダンサーさんもリハーサルから全力で、本番同様にパフォーマンスをされてる様子も見られたことは勉強になりました。あと楽屋が近かったので、一緒に筋トレやストレッチをやらせてもらったんですけど、私たちは全然ちゃんとできなくて(笑)。そんなふうに皆さんにかわいがってもらいましたね。

Also, I learned a lot from seeing the dancers work just as hard in rehearsals as they did in real performances. Because our dressing rooms were close together, they let us do strength training and stretches with them, but we couldn’t do it properly at all (laughs). They took really good care of us!

――そして、刺激的な2014年を締め括ったのが、11月にアメリカ・ニューヨークとイギリス・ロンドンで開催されたワンマン公演。ラストとなったロンドンのO2アカデミー・ブリクストン公演では、当時未発表の「Road of Resistance」をライヴで突如披露している。

The exciting year of 2014 ended with their solo shows in New York and London in November. At the last show at the O2 Academy Brixton in London, they suddenly performed the previously unreleased Road of Resistance for the first time.

やっぱり、イギリスでのライヴで初披露した「Road of Resistance」は忘れられないですね。「みんなで進んでいくんだ」っていうBABYMETALのなかにある強い意志が表現された曲ですけど、歌詞がスッと自分のなかに入ってきたのは、あのライヴの時なんです。目の前の景色を見た時に......初めて海外を廻ってきて、BABYMETALがこんなふうに温かく受け入れられて、みんなが背中を押してくれる、ここからみんなで前に進むんだ、BABYMETALとして道を切り開いていくんだって.....そう思えたんですね。それと、お客さんの反応を目の当たりにしたことで曲の熱量が大きくなっていって、そこで「ああ、この曲って、こういう曲なんだ!」って本質がわかったんですよね。私たちにとってのあの曲の意味も、BABYMETALのこれからの在り方も理解できたんです。

たぶん、私たちが言っている「道なき道を切り開く」っていう言葉も、このライヴがあったから言えたと思うんですね。それだけの自信をもらったし、ここで得たものはかなり大きいと思います。

That first Road of Resistance performance in the UK was unforgettable. It’s a song that expresses the strong will of BABYMETAL, and “let’s move forward as one”. It was at that show that I truly experienced the meaning of the lyrics. When I saw such a scene before me… it was our first extensive journey around the world, and I felt that BABYMETAL had been accepted warmly, with everyone pushing us forward… that’s what was on my mind. Then we saw the reaction of the audience as they magnified the song through their passionate response, and I realized the essence of it, “Oh, so this is what the song is about!” I understood what the song meant for us, and what BABYMETAL was moving towards. I think it’s because of this show that we could say, “we’re going to blaze our own path”. That performance boosted our confidence very much, and I think I gained a lot from it.

私独りじゃなく、みんながいたから不安はなかった

I wasn’t worried, because everyone was with me

――2015年になり、メタルレジスタンスは第3章に突入。”TRILOGY”と呼ばれる3本の国内アリーナ公演を行うのと同時に、並行して2度目のワールドツアーも開催。前年末に披露した「Road of Resistance」という強力な武器を携えて、まさに道なき道を進んでいくBABYMETALの姿がそこにあった。

In 2015, Metal Resistance entered its third chapter. They held 3 Japanese arena shows called “TRILOGY” at the same time as their second world tour. With the powerful weapon, “Road of Resistance” unveiled at the end of the previous year, BABYMETAL began its advance down an unmarked path.

アリーナクラスでのライヴを複数回させてもらう機会が増えて、ひとつ言えるのは、ああいった場所で「Road of Resistance」を歌うのは、めちゃめちゃ気持ちよかったということです(笑)。「Road of Resistance」っていまだに背中を押される曲ですけど、特にこの頃はそれをすごく感じていたんです。海外も含めて、まだまだこれから道を切り開いていかなきゃいけないっていうがむしゃらな想いと、それに対するお客さんの声援が重なって、なんかもう、あの曲を披露している瞬間は幸せな気持ちになりますね。ライヴの最後はその余韻に浸ってるんですけど、1月のさいたまスーパーアリーナの時かな(「BABYMETAL LEGEND “2015" ~新春キツネ祭り~」)、あれだけの数のお客さんの声を直で聞いて応援歌みたいだなって思ったんですよ。だから、その後も頑張れたところがあります。

We had more opportunities to play several arena shows, and one thing I can say is that it felt so good to sing Road of Resistance in those venues (laughs). Road of Resistance is a song that gives me courage and makes me stand proud. This was something I felt very clearly at the time. This burning desire to cut a path for ourselves and take on the world, the audience’s roaring response… it gave me a deep sense of joy while performing. At the end of the show, I was immersed in the afterglow, but at the Saitama Super Arena in January (BABYMETAL LEGEND “2015” ~New Year’s Fox Festival), hearing so many people shout in unison made it feel like a song in which the audience was cheering us on. That’s something that helped me continue to work hard after that.

それと、ライヴハウスではBABYMETALの大事な要素であるメタルらしい熱量を感じつつ、映画やミュージカルのようなストーリーが作り込まれたもうひとつのBABYMETALらしい要素がアリーナクラスの会場だと表現できていて、そういった世界観の異なる2種類のライヴができる喜びも感じてましたね。

At live house shows, you can feel the heat of metal, which is an important element for BABYMETAL, and large arenas allow us to express BABYMETAL-like elements with a storyline like a movie or musical. I’ve really enjoyed being able to perform two different styles of shows with such contrasting atmospheres.

――「Road of Resistance」は、ものすごいエネルギーを秘めた曲だということがこれまでの彼女の言葉からひしひしと伝わってくる。もちろん観ているこちらも、あの劇的なイントロが鳴り響いた瞬間、メンバーの立ち姿と相まって泣きそうになるのだけれど。

From SU-METAL’s words, it’s clear that Road of Resistance is a song overflowing with energy. Of course, when the dramatic intro kicks in, the stoic figures standing upon the stage makes you want to cry.

本当にすごい曲ですよね。しかもあの曲は、積み重ねていってる曲という気がしていて。ライヴをやる上で曲を見直したりする機会があるんですけど、前回の形を踏まえて今回も同じようにしようっていう曲ではないんですよ。毎回イチから作り上げていく曲っていうんですかね。さらにパフォーマンスのさなかでも、みんなでその場で創っていっている感覚があるんです。だから毎回感動するし、パワーをもらえるし、すごく大切な曲になってるんだと思います。

It’s such a great song. Moreover, I feel it’s something that we’ve been building up towards.When we perform live, it’s always a chance to review and work on it; it’s not a song where we’re going to do the same thing over and over again - we approach it anew each time. Even in the midst of the performance, I feel like we’re creating it on the spot. That’s why I’m always moved and empowered by it, and I think it’s a very important song.

――”TRILOGY”シリーズの最後、12月の横浜アリーナ公演「BABYMETAL WORLD TOUR 2015 -THE FINAL CHAPTER OF TRILOGY-」では、「THE ONE」でゴンドラに乗り空中を旋回する演出まで飛び出した。そのスケールアップするショウを前に、毎回感動や衝撃が上書きされていった記憶がある。

“BABYMETAL WORLD TOUR 2015” marked the final chapter of the trilogy at Yokohama Arena in December. During The One, BABYMETAL took to flight in a gondola, soaring in the air. The scale of their shows never ceases to shock and amaze every time.

あのアイデアの発端は、「空を飛びたい」って言ったからなんですよ。ライヴで何がやりたい?って訊かれたので(笑)。だから、まず空を飛べた喜びがすごくあって。あれだけ近くの距離でお客さんを見ることができたのって、今のところあれが最後ですよね。あれだけ近くに行けたからこそ、いろんな人の表情が見れて......もちろん小さい会場のライヴだったら、お客さんの顔を近くに見られますけど、みんな揉みくちゃになって、結構大変なことになってるんですね。でも大きい会場だったら、みんなが余裕をもってこっちをしっかり見ることができて、私たちもそこに寄り添えるっていう。ああいうシチュエーションは素敵だなって思うんです。

The idea started because we remarked “We want to fly in the sky” when they asked us if there was something we wanted to try at a show (laughs). So of course, we were delighted when it actually happened. That was the last time I saw an arena audience from such a close distance, and it was like we were right next to them. Of course, at small venues, we can also see the audience’s faces up close and personal, but it’s kind of hard to see them as clearly, because to a certain extent, they're always moshing and jostling around in a glorious mess. At large venues, there’s a bit more space and we can be there with them in a different way. I think it’s a nice situation.

――また、メキシコやイタリアなど初めて訪れる国もあった2015年のワールドツアー。BABYMETALにとってまだまだ未体験のことも多く、そこでも苦悶の日々を送ったという。

The 2015 World Tour included their first visits to countries like Mexico and Italy. For BABYMETAL, there were many things they experienced for the first time, and it resulted in some trying and difficult days.

それなりに海外でのライヴがどんなものなのか理解してるつもりでしたけど、戸惑うこともたくさんありましたね。会場内の暑さが尋常じゃなかったり、音響や照明がリハーサルと全然違うことになっていたりとか。毎回ヒヤヒヤドキドキしながらライヴをやっていたことは覚えてます。初めての国や土地はお客さんとも初めましてだから状況が推測できなくて、そもそもメタルを知ってる人たちかどうかもわからないし(笑)。

I thought I had a good understanding of what it was like to perform overseas, but there were a lot of perplexing things. The heat in the venue was unbelievably hot, and the sound and lighting were completely different from the rehearsals. I remember how nervous I was for each show. It’s hard to figure things out the first time we visit a new country, so I never know for sure if the audience is made up of metalheads or not (laughs).

そういうところからスタートしていたので、毎回のライヴをお客さんとつくっていってましたね。音楽を通して対話をして仲良くなっていく、そういう感じだったのかな。

I guess that’s how we started, huh? Creating each show together with the audience. Perhaps that’s how I felt, talking to them through music, and getting to know them.

だから、ステージから捌けるたびに3人で、「今日のお客さんはこんな感じ?」みたいなことを言い合って、どうすべきかを話した上で、ライヴ中もお互いアイコンタクトをとりながら、「ここはこういうふうに行こう」みたいに何となくやり取りしてつくっていったんです。

So each time we took a break from the stage, the three of us would discuss things like, “How is the crowd today?” and talk about how to proceed next. During the show, we’d make eye contact with each other, and gesture “let’s do this part this way” or something like that.

――その手探りで正解を探す形に不安はなかったのだろうか?

Wasn’t this search for the right answer unsettling?

不安を感じる暇がなかったかもしれない。なんかもう、常に課題が目の前にあるので。やるしかない、という(笑)。私独りだったらもしかしたら不安に思ってたかもしれないけど、そこはみんながいたから、そういった不安は感じてなかったと思います。

Maybe I just didn’t have enough downtime to feel anxious. There’s always going to be a challenge, and you’ve got to just go for it, I suppose (laughs). If I had been alone, perhaps it would have felt unsettling, but because of our unity, I didn’t feel that kind of anxiety.

あと、この年は、日本各地のZeppを廻ったツアーがあって(「BABYMETAL WORLD TOUR 2015 in JAPAN」)。全国の美味しい物が食べられたりして本当に幸せだったなということと(笑)、私たちのことがまだまだ知られてない土地もあったので、もっともっといろんな地域の方の所に会いに行くべきだなって思いました。こういう形のライヴは是非またやりたいですね。

Also, we had a Zepp tour around Japan (BABYMETAL WORLD TOUR 2015 in JAPAN). I was really happy to eat delicious food from all over the country (laughs), and there were places where people hadn’t heard of us yet, so I thought we should go visit more and more people in other places. I’d like to do this kind of show again!

中学生ながらに、「こわっ!」って思ってました(笑)

It was pretty scary for a junior high school student (laughs)

――現在のBABYMETALの礎を築いたメタルレジスタンス第2章。SU-METALに続き、MOAMETALにも、まずはその導入となった最初のワールドツアーについて訊いていく。

Following SU-METAL, we begin by asking MOAMETAL about the first world tour that served as a fitting introduction to the second chapter of Metal Resistance, which established the foundation of the current BABYMETAL.

その時は中学生だったんですけど、「ケルンやパリ!教科書で見た場所だ!」っていう土地に行けることに興奮してました(笑)。ライヴに関しては、小さい頃から物怖じしない性格だったせいか、結構楽しんでやってましたね。日本と違いを感じたことといえば、目の前の光景が全然違うことですかね。体格の大きさが違っていたり、身体に落書きが入っていたり(笑)。

As a student, I was like, “Cologne! Paris! I read about these places in my textbooks!”, and was very excited to visit such places. I had a lot of fun at the shows - maybe it’s because even as a child, I’ve never shied away from scary things. Speaking of differences with Japan, the crowds were definitely different. People were a lot bigger, and many of them had tattoos (laughs).

ただ、あの頃はまだ「BABYMETALって何ぞや?」って、ちょっと見定めてみようという気持ちで来る人が多い雰囲気だったし、フェスだと冷たい視線もかなりあって。中学生ながらにそこは感じていて、「こわっ!」って思っちゃいました(笑)。その視線も撥ね飛ばそうじゃないけど、「怖いけど、いつもどおりやるのみだね」って話していたので、パフォーマンスに影響は一切なかったですね。

Back then, a lot of the people who came to the shows had no idea who we were, and were just curious. At festivals, there were a lot of cold stares. Being a junior high school girl at the time, I thought it was pretty scary (laughs). We took these challenges on directly, thinking “we might be scared, but we’ll just do what we always do”, so it didn’t affect our performances at all.

――また、ツアー序盤、7月3日のドイツ公演はMOAMETALの聖誕祭として行われたことも記憶に残っている人は多いだろう。

The Germany show on July 3 early in the tour is remembered as a birthday celebration for MOAMETAL.

6年前で15歳の時、時間が経つのが早いですね。あの日のライヴは、初めて「ヘドバンギャー!!」の後半部分を1人で歌ったんですけど、全然緊張しなくて楽しかった記憶があります。去年、20歳の聖誕祭でも歌いましたけど、この時のことを思い出しましたね。お客さんの歓声が聞こえた時に、2014年にも確かにこういう場面があったなって。それで、ライヴは誕生日の1日前でしたけど、誕生日当日もメンバーと一緒にいられて、それもすごく楽しかったんですよ。その7月4日は移動日で、飛行機に乗っていた関係で時差が1時間あったので、誕生日を25時間過ごすことができたんです。それがうれしかったんでしょうね、私のスケジュール帳にも「誕生日が25時間だった」って書いてありましたから。

My 15th birthday was 6 years ago… time goes by so quickly! That day, I sang the second half of Headbanger, and it was a lot of fun - I didn’t feel nervous at all. Last year, when I sang again for my 20th birthday, the scene from 2014 came back to me as I heard the audience’s cheers. The show was the day before my birthday, and I was really happy that I got to celebrate it with BABYMETAL. We were traveling on July 4th, so because of the time zone difference, I got to enjoy a 25 hour birthday. That made me pretty happy, because I look back in my journal and it says “My birthday was 25 hours long!”

――同じく7月には、ソニスフィア・フェスティバルUKに出演。当日の映像が公式YouTubeチャンネルにアップされているが、異国の地で果敢に挑むその姿が今となっては懐かしくもある。

Also in July was their appearance at the UK Sonisphere Festival. The video from that performance is up on BABYMETAL’s official YouTube channel, and the way they boldly took on this challenge in a foreign land is quite a nostalgic memory.

BABYMETALを知らない人が多かった印象で、その時にも怖そうな人たちがいるなって感じていて。ただ、”いつもどおり”に徹していたので、ステージ上の私たちは普段と変わらなかったんですよね。その後、取材とかでSU-METALがよく「ソニスフィアの時のステージがすごくて」という話をしてるので、その言葉を聞いて、「あっ、すごかったんだな」って思うようにしてました(笑)。あの時は冒頭からイヤモニが聞こえなくなってしまって、スタッフさんが助けてくださって途中から復活したんですけど、SU-METALもこちらを気遣う様子を見せてくれて、いいチームワークに恵まれて本当に良かったなって。フェスでのトラブルに対処する方法も学んだし、そんな状況になっても「やっちゃおうぜ!」みたいな楽しさがあったので、どんどん気持ちが上がっていきましたね。

A lot of the audience had never heard of BABYMETAL before, and I felt there were quite a few scary looking people at the time. But we resolved to “do what we always do”, and weren’t affected by it when we stepped onto the stage. After that, SU-METAL often said during interviews “the stage at Sonisphere was so great!”, so every time I hear her say so, I also think, “Yeah, it was pretty cool, huh” (laughs)*. Initially, my ear monitor wasn’t functioning correctly, but the staff helped to get it working by the middle of the show. I could see that SU-METAL was paying close attention to how I was doing, which made me feel so relieved to be blessed with such good teamwork. I learned how to deal with troubles at the festival, and even in such situations, there was a sense of playfulness, like “Let’s do it!” It was such an exciting and uplifting atmosphere.

(*Translator’s Note: this part is slightly difficult to translate directly in the text. But basically, Moa believed the she performed as she always does, but Su’s feeling from the show differed from Moa’s (Su enjoyed it even more), which gradually affected Moa’s view of Sonisphere as well)

――巨大フェスへの出演に続き、その後レディー・ガガの北米ツアーのサポートを務めたBABYMETALだったが、そのサプライズ感は当時から彼女自身も感じていたようだ。

Following their performance at this huge festival, BABYMETAL was featured as a supporting act for Lady Gaga’s North American tour, and she must have realized even at the time that such an experience is unquestionably a rare thing. 

レディー・ガガさんって、誰もが知ってる有名な方じゃないですか。そんな人のツアーに帯同できることに驚いたし、ガガさんがサポートアクトを観る回数って基本1回らしいんですけど、私たちのステージを何度も観に来てくださって。そんなにガガさんに響いて喜んでもらえてるんだと思ったら、本当にうれしかったですね。すごく優しくてよくしてくれましたし、会う度に髪色が違ってカッコいいなって。裏で会った時とステージ上とで髪色が違っていて、どれが本当のガガさんなのか子供ながらに考えてました(笑)。

Who doesn’t know Lady Gaga? I was so surprised when I learned we would be accompanying her tour - I heard that she typically works with a support act only once, but she came to see us perform many times, and I was really happy to see her so much, and moved that she enjoyed watching our show. Lady Gaga was so kind and helpful to us, and her hair color was different every time I saw her. Because her hair color was different backstage, I would wonder like a child which one was the real Lady Gaga (laughs).

今でも覚えているのが、一緒に写真を撮った時にガガさんが私の肩に手を回してくれて、その手に触れてすごく興奮したこと(笑)。あと、ガガさんの髪が私のグローブに引っ掛かって、毛が1本だけ抜けてしまったんですよ。それに後で気が付いて、その髪の毛をどうしようかと思ったんですけど......今でも大切に取ってあります。

I still remember that when we took a picture together, Lady Gaga put her hand on my shoulder, which made me very excited (laughs). Also, a strand of her hair got caught in my glove, and when I found it later, I wondered what to do with it… I’ve preserved it carefully to this day.

「あなたたちの音楽が好きだよ」みたいに言ってくれたことを単語で何となく理解できたことがうれしかったし、次に会えた時はもっとお話しできたらいいなって。ガガさんとのツアーは勉強になることばかりで、いろんな人がステージを支えていることがわかったし、私たちもそこに関われて幸せだったなぁって思いますね。

I was happy that I could understand her when she said, “I like your music”, and I hope we can talk more fluently next time we meet. I learned a lot from that tour with Lady Gaga, and it taught me more about the people who support each show - we were really lucky to have been a part of it.

――そして、11月のロンドン・O2アカデミー・ブリクストン公演で初披露した第2章と第3章の架け橋となるナンバー「Road of Resistance」についても、やはり語ってもらわなければならないだろう。

We proceed to talk about “Road of Resistance”, which bridged the 2nd and 3rd chapters, first performed at the London O2 Academy Brixton show in November.

次に向けて私たちが戦っていく意志を見せようというところで披露したんですけど、最初の時点から燃え上がる曲でしたね。旗を使った演出とか、SU-METALがウォール・オブ・デスを指示するところとかすべてがカッコいいし、初めて聴いた時に、自分なりに「めちゃめちゃメタルだな」って思ったんです。カッコ良くて、すごく速い、これが私が学んだメタルだ、って。BABYMETALの強い意志が詰まってる曲なので、大好きな曲のひとつですね。

Road of Resistance demonstrates our will to fight and move forward; it’s been a passionate song from the very beginning. The opening with the flags and SU-METAL calling for a Wall of Death is very cool, and the first time I listened to it, I thought to myself, “this is SO metal!” It’s awesome, very fast, and representative of what I’ve learned from metal. It’s overflowing with BABYMETAL’s fighting spirit, so it’s one of my favorite songs.

――繰り返しになるが、特にライヴにおける「Road of Resistance」の名曲/名場面っぷりは、何度体感しても感動を呼び起こし、もはや言葉では説明できないクライマックス的ナンバーに成長している。

The live performance of Road of Resistance has grown into a climactic number that words cannot do justice. It evokes powerful emotions no matter how many times you experience it live.

戦国時代をイメージさせるオープニングのストーリームービー含めて、私も大好きですね。2014年から2015年にかけては武者修行のつもりで活動していたので、戦国時代の武士のような気持ちを自分のなかで重ね合わせてました。歌詞は当時の自分の想いとリンクするし、今でも勇気づけられますね。あの法螺貝の音色を聴くと、私もウォール・オブ・デスに参加してみたいなって気持ちになるんですよ(笑)。

I love the opening story movie that uses imagery from the Warring States period. Between 2014 and 2015, I trained and worked much like a warrior trainee, so I superimposed that historical warrior imagery into my mind. The lyrics of the song link with my thoughts at that time, and still give me courage. When I hear the sound of the horn calling for battle, it makes me want to join the Wall of Death (laughs).

――彼女をウォール・オブ・デスにいざなうほどの魔力を秘めた楽曲を携えて、メタルレジスタンスは第三章に突入。2015年に開催された”TRILOGY”と銘打たれた国内アリーナ公演では、初披露となる新曲も組み込まれ、新たな可能性を提示することになる。

With songs magical enough to draw her into the Wall of Death, Metal Resistance entered its third chapter. At the 2015 “TRILOGY” series of Japanese arena shows, BABYMETAL presented new possibilities and new songs for the first time.

新曲では、「KARATE」を初披露した時が強く印象に残ってますね。あの曲もかなり好きな曲で、歌詞もいいんですよね。戦っていくんだという精神が込められていて、それがライヴでも伝わればいいなと思っていたんですけど、初披露だったのに最前にいた女性のお客さんが泣いていたんです。その光景がずっと目に焼き付いていて、こんなに涙するほど伝わるなんてと感じてうれしかったですね。

The first performance of Karate was very memorable. It’s a song I like very much, and the lyrics are great! It contains a strong fighting spirit, and I try to express that through our dance. The first time we played it, a woman at the very front of the barrier was crying! That scene of someone being moved to tears by our message is seared into my mind, and fills me with joy.

あとは、「ヤバッ!」を覚えるのが大変だったなって。2015年の5月から6月のワールドツアー中に毎日練習していたんですけど、あの曲はスカのリズムなのでリズムをとるのが難しかったし、さらに速いしで。結果的に、ダンスの幅が広がりました。

Yava! was hard to memorize. During the world tour in May-June 2015, we rehearsed every day, but it was difficult to get the rhythm of the song correctly because it uses a fast-paced ska rhythm. Ultimately, it helped broaden and expand my dance style.

それと、Zeppツアー(「BABYMETAL WORLD TOUR 2015 in JAPAN」)はすっごく楽しくて、この規模でまた国内ツアーがやりたくてしょうがないです。巨大な会場のフェスに出てアウェーなのも楽しいし、小さいステージは私たちを待ってくださっているお客さんに会える場所なので楽しいし、どちらも好きなんですよね。

And the Zepp tour (BABYMETAL WORLD TOUR 2015 in JAPAN) was so much fun - I can’t wait to do another Japanese tour of this scale. It’s fun to be away from home at a huge festival, and it’s also fun to be on a small stage where we can meet people more directly. I like both!

――また、12月の横浜アリーナ公演「BABYMETAL WORLD TOUR 2015 -THE FINAL CHAPTER OF TRILOGY-」のラストでは、翌年の東京ドーム公演開催を発表。その時の”奇跡”についても話は及んだ。

At the end of the “BABYMETAL WORLD TOUR 2015 - THE FINAL CHAPTER OF TRILOGY” in Yokohama Arena in December, BABYMETAL announced next year’s Tokyo Dome concert. MOAMETAL talks with us about this “miracle”.

あの日、東京ドーム公演が発表されましたけど、東京ドームへと繋がる”TRILOGY”の会場名の頭文字がそれぞれ、さいたまスーパーアリーナが”S”、幕張メッセが”M”、横浜アリーナが”Y”なんですよね。しかも、地図上で会場がある場所を線で繋いだ三角形の中心に東京ドームがあるというところで、「何て奇跡なんだ!」って思いましたね。本当に鳥肌が立った記憶があります。

When the Tokyo Dome concert was announced at that stage, I noticed something amazing: the initial letters of the “TRILOGY” venues leading up to Tokyo Dome were “S” for Saitama Super Arena, “M” for Makuhari Messe, and “Y” for Yokohama Arena, respectively. (the same as our names!) Moreover, Tokyo Dome is situated at the center of the triangle connecting the three venues! “What a miracle!” I thought, and it really gave me goosebumps.

――MOAMETALの話に改めて鳥肌が立ってしまったが、これもまた前人未到の奇跡を連続させるBABYMETALらしいエピソードなのかもしれない。また、2度目のワールドツアーの話題では、”食”についての話から始まることに。

This story from MOAMETAL indeed gives a person goosebumps, and it is yet another episode of BABYMETAL’s series of unprecedented miracles. Speaking of their second world tour, the topic now moves to food.

写真を見返したら、2014年のツアーと比べて、2015年のツアーの時のほうがゴハンの写真が多かったです(笑)。メキシコで10枚ぐらい似た写真があって、それが生搾りのオレンジジュースの写真で、相当美味しかったんでしょうね。その辺りから、海外に行くと食事からも文化を学ぼうっていうところが出てきたのかな......私は食事担当なので(笑)。いつも食事から文化を学んでます。どこに行っても現地のものを食べたいなって思うし、日本食もそれほど恋しくはならないですし。母のゴハンが恋しくなるだけで。

Going through my photo album, there were a lot more photos of food on the 2015 tour compared to 2014 (laughs). I found 10 pretty similar photos taken in Mexico, which were of freshly squeezed orange juice. It must have been quite tasty! I guess that’s when I started to learn about culture from its food… when we travel abroad, I’m in charge of the food (laughs). I always make it a point to learn about culture through food. Wherever I go, I want to try the local cuisine, and I don’t miss Japanese food too much. I just miss my mother’s cooking.

ライヴの話もしないとですね(笑)。たとえば、メキシコは標高が高くて、かなり酸素が薄かったんですよね。実際にステージに立ってみると木製の床が傷んでいるような所があったり、日本では全然考えられない環境がそこにはあって。外国に行けるだけでうれしい、っていう話ではなくなっていて、いろんな状況のなかで最善を尽くすということは大変だなと感じていました。

I guess we need to talk about the shows too (laughs). For example, in Mexico, the altitude was high and the oxygen was quite thin. There were actually places on stage where the wooden floor seemed to be damaged, which is entirely unthinkable in Japan. I wouldn’t say that I’m happy just to have the opportunity to go abroad, it’s not just about that. More importantly, it compels me to do my best in different challenging situations.

SU-METALを支えたいって心の底から思ってました

I wanted to support SU-METAL from the bottom of my heart

――世界ベースで活動し、そのあまりに目まぐるしい時の流れのなかで、それこそ増えていくパスポートのスタンプの数で自身の足跡を実感することもあったはず、などと想像を巡らせてしまう。

As they expanded their global activities, time passed by at a dizzying pace, and the increasing number of passport stamps might serve as the most tangible witness to each step taken.

そう、スタンプが増えてうれしかったです。コレクションが大好きなので(笑)。2015年のワールドツアーの話だと、5月にロック・オン・ザ・レンジというフェスに出て、ここでジューダスさんに初めて会って、一緒に写真を撮ってもらったのが印象に残ってますね。「あれがメタル界で有名なジューダス・プリーストか!」と驚いてました。あとは、6月の「KERRANG! AWARDS」で会ったブリング・ミー・ザ・ホライズンさんが、8月のレディング&リーズ・フェスティバルの時にライヴを観に来てくれて、急にメタル界に友達ができた瞬間でしたね。一度会ったら友達ですから(笑)。

Yes, I was happy to collect more and more passport stamps. I love my collection (laughs). Speaking of the 2015 world tour, I remember the first time I met Judas Priest at the Rock on the Range festival in May, and we took a photo together. I was so surprised, “It’s the legendary Judas Priest!” Then at the “KERRANG! AWARDS” in June, we met Bring Me The Horizon, and they came to see our show at the Reading & Leeds Festival in August. It was in these moments that I knew we had made friends in the metal world. Once we meet, we are friends forever (laughs).

――「一度会ったら友達」とはけだし名言だが、この頃はドラゴンフォースのステージへの飛び入りなどもあり、前年にも増してBABYMETALの輪が世界レベルで広がっている印象があった。

“Once we meet, we are friends forever.” They also made a surprise appearance sharing the stage with Dragonforce, and we get the impression that BABYMETAL’s circle was expanding on a global level, more than the years before.

この時期は確かに輪が広がっていた時期で、同時にライヴも増えていったので体力をつけなきゃいけないと思って、ツアーとツアーの合間に公園に行って、そこで自主的にリハーサルをよくしてました。今じゃ考えられないですけど、海外だけじゃなく、日本でも3人揃って公園で練習してたんです。屋外と屋内の環境は全然違うから、直射日光を浴びながら踊るのはどういう環境なのかとかを勉強するために、ライヴ1本分を外で踊って、帰ってきてから修正するっていうことを繰り返してました。

We were expanding our circle, and had more and more shows scheduled close to one another, so building up stamina was crucial. We used to go to the park between tours and rehearse there. Actually, now that I think of it, the three of us practiced in the park not only abroad, but in Japan as well. Indoor and outdoor environments are totally different, so we’d run through a full show outside to learn about the environment, and experience dancing while exposed to the sun. Then we’d revise it some more after returning.

――何と、この時期にBABYMETALが白昼堂々、公園で練習していたというのだから驚かされる。目撃していたファンがいても不思議ではない。いやはや、実に貴重な話だったが、MOAMETAL自ら当時の大切な思い出を語ってくれた。

The fact that BABYMETAL practiced in the park in broad daylight back then is astonishing. It’s no wonder that there are fans that witnessed these rehearsals. It was truly a great story, and MOAMETAL shares some precious memories from those days.

2015年はクリスマスもメンバーと一緒だったし、この時期は1年を通してずっと一緒にいたんですよね。だから、どんどん団結力が強くなっていったなと思いますし、SU-METALともよく話すようになった時期でしたね。本当に、”お姉ちゃん”というべき存在だったので。以前は一緒にいることが多くても、そこまで深い話をすることもなかったんですけど、いろいろ話を聞いていくうちに、ここは考え方が一緒だなって思ったり、BABYMETALに対する想いとかもお互いがちゃんと話せるようになったんですよね。この頃からSU-METALのことをわかりたいと思えるようになったし、支えたいって心の底から思ってました。それまではただの友達だったのが、この時期にどんどん強い絆が生まれていってる感覚がありましたね。

We spent Christmas of 2015 together, even though we’d just spent the entire year with one another. Our unity became stronger and stronger, and I talked a lot with SU-METAL during that time. She really has been a “big sister*” to me. We used to spend a lot of time together, but didn’t really have deep conversations at first. As we talked more, I realized that we had similar ways of thinking, and we were able to discuss our thoughts on BABYMETAL. Since then, I’ve wanted to understand SU-METAL deeply, and support her from the bottom of my heart. We were “just friends” before, but during this period, I felt that a strong bond was being born.

(*Translator’s note: Japanese has several different words that mean “sister that is older than you in age”, and each one has a slightly different connotation, though technically the meaning is the same. 

“姉/Ane” or “お姉さん/Onee-san” is neutral and relatively straightforward in meaning “elder sister”. But the word “-chan” used by Moa when she talks about Su in this paragraph is generally used in a less formal context, between people who are quite close only. Therefore, by using the word “お姉ちゃん/Onee-chan”, it seems to imply a closer relationship with Su (hence the translation of “big sister” as opposed to “older sister”), much like a small child who loves an older sibling would say.)
