――約１年間にわたって行われたワールドツアー「BABYMETAL WORLD TOUR 2023 - 2024」が３月23・24日の沖縄公演にてファイナルを迎えました。今回はBABYMETAL史上最大のツアーということで、自分たちにとってはどんなツアーになったと思いますか。
“BABYMETAL WORLD TOUR 2023-2024” concluded on March 23 and 24 with the finale in Okinawa. Please tell us how you felt about the biggest tour in BABYMETAL history!
SU-METAL 今回、初めてアジアの国々を回らせてもらったり、念願だった場所にたくさん行くことができました。「来てほしい！」という声に応えていたら、史上最大規模のツアーになっていたというか。私たちは、ライブ活動を封印していた時期があったので、実際にツアーが発表されてからも「本当にみんなBABYMETALを知っていて、ちゃんとライブに来てくれるのだろうか」という不安がけっこうある中ではじまったツアーでした。でも、どこの会場に行っても盛り上がりが本当にすごかったし、ライブの成果がツアー中にしっかりと感じられたので、これまでの積み重ねがあっての今だから、今までがんばってきてよかったなと思ったし、素直に楽しかったですね。
SU-METAL: This time, we got to tour several Asian countries for the first time and other places that we’d always wanted to go to! So many places said “please come to our country!” and that’s how it ended up as our largest tour to date. Because we’d been sealed away for some time before, after the tour was announced, we were quite anxious about whether or not people would actually know about BABYMETAL, and if they would actually show up to our concerts. However, the level of excitement at every venue we went to was amazing, and we really felt a sense of accomplishment from our shows, so I was glad that all the hard work paid off and we got to have so much fun.
――「こんなに待っていてくれたのか！」という驚きはありましたか。
You were surprised that there were this many people eagerly awaiting you even after all this time?
SU-METAL ドイツの会場では後ろのお客さんが見えないぐらい、ぶわぁ〜っと人が広がっていて、「この規模感でワンマンをやってるんだ······ ！」と驚いたし、お客さんの年齢層も本当にバラバラで、ちっちゃい子からおじいちゃんおばあちゃんまでいて、「みんな、なんでここにいるんだろう······ ？」って不思議に思うほどでした。自分たちがメタルのライブをやっていることを忘れそうになるぐらいの、孫の成長を見守っているような笑顔で観てくださっていたり。なんだかすごくカオスな空間でした。
SU-METAL: At one of the venues in Germany, the crowd was so massive that I could barely see the people all the way in the back, and I was astonished that we could fill up such a venue for a solo show! The age range of the audience was so varied, from little kids to grandparents. I was really astonished and bewildered, thinking to myself “How in the world did they all end up here together in the same place?” They watched us with affectionate smiles on their faces, as if they were seeing their own grandchildren all grown-up, and I nearly forgot that we were performing a metal concert. It was quite the chaotic space.
――結成から10年以上を経て過去には東京ドームで単独公演を行ったり、数万人も集まるフェスのメインステージを何度も経験していても、「なんでこんなに人がいるんだろう？」という気持ちになるんですね。
Even though it’s been more than 10 years since your debut, and you’ve performed at places as grand as the Tokyo Dome plus main stages at festivals with tens of thousands of people countless times, it still feels somewhat bewildering that there are so many people that come out to see you?
MOAMETAL 「どこで知るんだろう？」と思うことが多いです。「ギミチョコ！！」がはやった10年前はツアーで「ギミチョコ！！」が一番盛り上がっている感覚があって。ということは、「ギミチョコ！！」でBABYMETALのことを知ってくれた人が多いとわかるんです。でも、いまどきの子ってYouTubeなのかTikTokなのか、どこでBABYMETALを知って、どんな情報を仕入れてくれているのかわからなすぎて。今までBABYMETALのライブに来てなかったような人たちがいっぱいいてすごく新鮮だったし、これまでと比べて圧倒的に小さい子が多くいるように感じました。私たちも14年ぐらい活動してきて大人になって、人からあこがれられる存在にちょっと近づけてるのかなと思うと、うれしいです。
MOAMETAL: I often wonder how people find out about us. Back when “Gimme Choco!!” went viral 10 years ago, the audience got noticeably more hyped when it was performed, so we could tell that this song was how they found out about BABYMETAL. But I don’t know where kids these days are finding out about things, whether it’s from YouTube or TikTok or elsewhere. It was quite refreshing to see so many people that had probably never been to a BABYMETAL concert before, and there seemed to be way more younger kids compared to before. After 14 years of work, it makes me happy to feel that we’ve grown up, and are gradually becoming a presence people can look up to.
SU-METAL 友だちや家族の付き添いで来ているような方たちも、私たちのことを知らないなりにその空間を楽しもうとしていて、その感じもすごくよかったです。そういう姿を観ているとこっちももっと楽しませたくなるし。そういう意味でも、今回のワールドツアー中は毎回イチからライブを作っている感覚がありました。
SU-METAL: Some seemed to have come mostly because they were accompanying friends or family, but seeing them having a good time in their own way despite not knowing anything about BABYMETAL left quite an impression on me. Seeing that kind of attitude motivated me to entertain them even more! In that sense, each show on this World Tour felt like building up something new from scratch.
――会場が大きくなり、来る人の数が増えているということは、数字の上ではファンの新陳代謝が起こっているのではなくて、新規のファンがただただ増え続けている状態になっているとも言えるわけで、それは本当にすごいことだと思います。
The fact that venue sizes keep growing, and crowds get larger and larger shows that you aren’t just in a state of “stable metabolism”, but rather the number of new fans keeps increasing, and that’s pretty amazing.
MOAMETAL うれしいですね。ライブの本数が多いことが大きいのかなあ。SABATONさんとも一緒にヨーロッパツアーを回らせてもらったし。
MOAMETAL: It makes me so happy! Maybe it’s in large part because we did so many shows on this World Tour, including on Sabaton-san’s European tour.
SU-METAL サポートさせてもらいました。あとはDETHKLOKさんとも一緒にやらせてもらったから、それも大きいかもしれない。
SU-METAL: Yes, we received a wonderful opportunity to support them. Also, our co-headline tour with DETHKLOK might have contributed too.
MOMOMETAL ライブの本数が増えていくうちに３人の絆がすごく深まってるのを感じるし、今は何かハプニングがあっても落ち着いて対応ができるだろうなって思えるので、それはツアーを回る中で少しずつ身についた力なんだと思います。あおり一つをとっても、今まではちょっと遠慮をしているところがあったんですけど、ファンの方々の温かさやみなさんが生み出す空気感のおかげで、どんどん解放されてきている気がします。あおることの意味がちゃんとわかってきたというか。
MOMOMETAL: The bond between the three of us deepened further with each performance, and now it seems like even if something doesn’t go to plan, I can handle it without a fuss, which is a power that is gradually acquired through touring. When it comes to hyping up the crowd, I used to be a bit more reserved, but thanks to the warm reception from the fans and the atmosphere they help create, I’ve been feeling more and more liberated, and I’m truly beginning to understand what it means to “stir up excitement”.
――昨年、KOBAMETALさんに話をうかがったとき（『PMC Vol.29』）に、MOMOMETALさんが隠し持っている牙はまだあるんじゃないかということをおっしゃっていたんですけど、SU-METALさんとMOAMETALさんは彼女のそういう「牙」をこのツアー中に感じることはありましたか。
When we talked to KOBAMETAL last year (translated here in PMC Vol.29), he mentioned that he felt MOMOMETAL might still have some “hidden fangs” to reveal. Did SU-METAL and MOAMETAL get a glimpse of that during this tour?
SU-METAL この１年でだいぶ変わったと思います。最初はもちろん遠慮してる部分があっただろうし、緊張していたと思うけど、ずっと一緒にいることで徐々にチームに溶け込んできて、徐々に牙を出すようになって······ MOMOMETALは魅力をたくさん持っている人だからこそ、その魅力って説明したくてもできないんですよね。だから、私たちはそれをいっばい引き出していきたいし、もっと見つけていきたいです。実際、MOMOMETALの20歳最後の夜と21歳の誕生日を祝った聖誕祭（３月２・３日「BABYMETAL WORLD TOUR 2023 - 2024 LEGEND-MM 20 NIGHT / 21 NIGHT」神奈川・横浜アリーナ）ではデスボイスを出したり、ソロパートで歌ったりしたことで、また違う一面が出てきたと思うんです。さっきMOMOMETALが言ってたあおりもそうですけど、ダンスに関しても進化していて。MOAMETALはもともとアドリブ力がすごく高いタイプなんですけど、MOMOMETALもそこにだんだん追いついてきていて。気づけば、なんか２人で遊んでるというか(笑)、そういう場面も増えてきたし、そういうMOMOMETALのポジティブなところがすてきだと思っています。
SU-METAL: She’s changed a lot over the past year. At first, she seemed a bit more reserved and nervous, but after being together all this time, she gradually began to show her “fangs” as she became more and more one with the team. MOMOMETAL has so many different kinds of charm points that it’s hard to explain what each of them is like using words. That’s why we want to unearth and draw out as much as possible. For instance, during her birthday celebration (LEGEND MM, March 2-3 at Yokohama Arena) she showcased a different side of herself by using death growls and singing solo parts. In addition to improving her ability to hype up the crowd, her dancing has also evolved as well. MOAMETAL has always had an incredible talent for spontaneous ad-libbing, but MOMOMETAL has gradually been catching up! The two of them are fooling around more and more now (laughs), and I think her positive nature is truly wonderful.
MOAMETAL BABYMETALの新しい武器、「牙」になったと思うのは、やっぱりデスボイスですね。それはこれまで私たちができなかったことだし、がんばっても出せない(笑)。それぐらい新しい要素だし、それによって曲の幅も広がったと思う。だから、今後も責任を持ってやっていただかないと(笑)。
MOAMETAL: Her “death growls” are definitely one of BABYMETAL’s new weapons or fangs. It’s something the two of us couldn’t do before, and wouldn’t be able to, try as we might (laughs). It’s such a novel element, and I think it has expanded the range of our music. That’s why it’ll be her responsibility to utilize it more from now on (laughs).
SU-METAL MOMOMETALは、私たちが出し尽くしてしまっていたり忘れていたような、遊び心を思い出させてくれて、そういう意味でも新しい風がたくさん吹いてるし、BABYMETALにとっていいスパイスになっていると思います。
SU-METAL: MOMOMETAL reminds us of a playful spirit that we had maybe used up or forgotten, bringing a breath of fresh air in many ways. In that sense, she’s added a wonderful new spice to BABYMETAL.
――MOMOMETALさんはそう言われてみてどうですか。
How does it make MOMOMETAL feel to hear that?
MOMOMETAL うれしいですよ〜。
MOMOMETAL: Very happy!
SU-METAL & MOAMETAL あはは！
SU-METAL & MOAMETAL: Ahaha!
MOMOMETAL でも、私はどちらかと言えば人見知りなので、２人がそういう雰囲気を作ってくれるから私も牙を出せてきているんだと思います。ありがたいですね。
MOMOMETAL: But I’m honestly somewhat shy and introverted, so I think it’s because the two of you create such a welcoming atmosphere that I’m able to display my fangs. I really appreciate it.

――ということは、MOMOMETALさんの聖誕祭では、あのタイミングだからこそできたパフォーマンスだったという部分もある？
So does this mean that the performance at MOMOMETAL’s birthday celebration was something that could only be done at that specific time?
MOMOMETAL 言われてみれば確かにそうですね。あれが去年だったら何倍も緊張していたと思うし、そのころはデスボイスもないし、歌うときのキャラクターボイス的なものもたぶん生み出せてなかったと思います。あのタイミングだったからこそできたことなんじゃないかと思います。今思い出しても幸せすぎる２日間でした。20歳最後の夜と21歳最初の夜にステージに立てて、みなさんからお祝いしていただけたことが本当に幸せで、超最高の思い出になりました。「META！メタ太郎」でステージの上から登場するとき、場内が照明でピンクに染まっていることを全然想像していなかったから、私の中では頭に鉢巻を巻いてるぐらいの気持ちでたくましい感じで出ていこうと思ってたし、そういう表情を作っていたんですけど、想像とは全く違うピンクのキレイな光景が目に飛び込んできて······ とても感動しました。
MOMOMETAL: Now that you mention it, that’s definitely true. If it had been last year, I would have been so much more nervous! I didn’t have my death growl yet, or the “character voice” I’ve been able to create either. I was only able to do what I did at Legend MM at that point in time. It still makes me glow with happiness to think back on those two days. It was a joy to be on stage on the last night of my 20th year, and the first night of my 21st year, with everyone celebrating together - it’s a super cherished memory! I had never imagined the arena would be dyed pink with lights when I first descended upon the stage during “META TARO”, so in my mind I had planned to go out looking all tough, like I was wearing a headband of determination, but when the completely unexpected gorgeous sea of pink appeared before me, I felt… super emotional.
SU-METAL ライブが終わったときのファンのみなさんの雰囲気が本当に「MOMOMETAL、おめでとう！」というお祝いムードで、MOMOMETALのためにこの場に来たんだよという感じがすごく伝わってきましたし、１日目は「ヘドバンギャー！！」が終わったあとにMOMOMETALコールが起こって。
SU-METAL: At the end of the show, the atmosphere among the fans was truly celebratory, with everyone expressing their congratulations towards MOMOMETAL, and you could really tell they were here for her. On the first day after “Headbanger!!”, there was even a “MOMOMETAL” chant as well!
MOAMETAL あれはすごかったよね。
MOAMETAL: That was quite something, wasn’t it?
SU-METAL MOMOMETALコールを聞いたことで、続く最後の「Road of Resistance」が私の中でさらに引き締まった感じがありました。あと、この日のライブでは、１年前にぴあアリーナMMでMOMOMETALが加わった新生BABYMETALの誕生を発表するときにMOMOMETALはもちろん、私たちも不安な気持ちがあったことを思い出しました。でも、「新体制に対していろんな意見があるだろうけど、自分たちで決めたからこれで行くんだ！それでも応援してくれるという人たちに応援してもらおう！」という決意をしてライブに臨んだんですけど、10年以上続いてきたところにいきなり入ってくること自体、相当大変だったはずなのに、あの日以降、ちゃんと結果を出し続けてくれたMOMOMETALは本当にすごいなと思います。しかも、ファンの方々もしっかりMOMOMETALがいる新生BABYMETALを応援してくれていて、それはワールドツアーを通して感じたことでした。
SU-METAL: Hearing them chant for MOMOMETAL made me tense up in anticipation for the upcoming closer “Road of Resistance”. Also, this concert reminded me of how anxious all of us felt when we announced the birth of the new BABYMETAL a year ago at Pia Arena MM. However, we forged forward with determination knowing that there would be various opinions about our new formation, but this was our decision and we were sticking with it, joined by those still willing to support us. It must have been such a daunting challenge to join a group that had already been going strong for over 10 years, and I’m truly amazed at how MOMOMETAL has been able to perform perfectly from Day 1. Moreover, fans have been totally supportive of the new BABYMETAL with MOMOMETAL; that’s something I could feel clearly throughout this World Tour.
MOAMETAL そうだね。
MOAMETAL: That’s right.
――MOMOMETALさんの「メタり！！」のパフォーマンスにおけるデスボイスは強烈なインパクトを与えましたし、それはギターで参加したTom Morelloとのコラボも同様で、BABYMETALのサウンドをさらに進化させました。そのほかにも、この１年はさまざまなコラボワークも印象的でしたね。そういった経験を通じて、今後より新しい展開が生まれていくように感じます。
Both MOMOMETAL’s section and Tom Morello’s guitar part in “Metali!!” leave quite a strong impression, further evolving BABYMETAL’s sound. In addition, the past year has been an impressive one in terms of collaborative works. It feels like more new developments are forthcoming in the future?
SU-METAL BABYMETALをはじめたころは、メタルのアーティストさんの真似をして自分たちなりのメタルをやっていこう、メタルを聴いてる人たちに自分たちもメタルだと認めてもらいたい、という気持ちでやってきました。そこからBABYMETALの中でどんなことをして遊べるかということをいろいろ挑戦したのが3rdアルバム『METAL GALAXY』だったんですけど、そういったことを踏まえて、私たちが参加したさまざまなコラボ曲を聴いてみると、自分たちが見ているBABYMETALとは違っていて、それがすごく面白いんです。
SU-METAL: Beginning in our early days of BABYMETAL, we’ve put forth an honest effort following the example of leading metal artists, gradually gaining acceptance from metal-lovers that we belonged. Then we challenged ourselves to see how much fun we could create within the BABYMETAL framework in the 3rd album Metal Galaxy. Listening to the various collaborative songs we’ve participated in, I found it very interesting how the sound is very different from our own perception of BABYMETAL.
――これまでは自分たちの曲に参加してもらうことはありましたが、Lil Uzi Vert「The End (feat. BABYMETAL)」もそうですし、BODYSLAMとF.HEROとの最新コラボ曲「LEAVE IT ALL BEHIND」のように、他のアーティストの曲に参加するということはありませんでしたからね。
In the past, other artists have featured in BABYMETAL songs, but never the other way around until recently, with songs like Lil Uzi Vert’s “The End”, or the latest collaboration with BODYSLAM and F.HERO “Leave it All Behind”.
SU-METAL コラボしたアーティストのみなさんに「BABYMETALにこんな歌を歌わせてみよう」とか「こんなことをやってみよう」って思ってもらえるような存在になれたことがうれしいし、ジャンルが違う音楽同士が合わさったことで起こる化学変化がすごく面白くて。でもそれって、BABYMETALという音楽がちゃんと確立されたからこそ可能なことだと思うので、これからもそういう経験をしてみたいなってすごく思います。着せ替え人形みたいに、どんな色の服をBABYMETALに着させてくれるんだろう、みたいな。もっとBABYMETALで遊んでほしいですね(笑)。そこでまた新たな発見があると思います。
SU-METAL: It’s affirming to have become the kind of presence that makes other artists want to have BABYMETAL sing a certain kind of song, or to try creating something new. The chemical reaction that occurs when two different genres of music are combined is incredibly fascinating! This is only possible now that BABYMETAL’s sound has become more firmly established, so I really want to continue doing things in the future! It’s like dressing up BABYMETAL with outfits in different colors and styles, looking forward to what kind of outfit we’ll be given next. I want more people to utilize BABYMETAL to create something fun (laughs). Some new discoveries will be unearthed for sure!
MOAMETAL コラボをすると、「この人にはBABYMETALってこう見えてるんだ」っていうことがすごくわかるんです。BABYMETALの世間的な印象ってこうなんだなとか、コラボで気づくことは多くて。
MOAMETAL: Collaborating with others helps us understand how they perceive BABYMETAL. We learn a lot about BABYMETAL’s general impression, and observe many things through collaborative works.
SU-METAL 「LEAVE IT ALL BEHIND」では、「ちょっとタイの民謡みたいな感じで歌ってみよう」とか、いろいろ試してみたことで、自分の新たな引き出しを開けられたところがあって。音楽の新しい可能性が見えてすごく楽しかったですね。
SU-METAL: For “Leave it All Behind”, we tried various different things, such as singing it like a Thai folk song, which opened up a whole new world of options for me. It was fun to open my eyes to new musical possibilities.
――具体的にどういう？
Can you give me an example of that?
SU-METAL なんて言ったらいいんだろうな······ ちょっと物悲しげな感じというか。普段はパツン！と歌っちゃうところも、ふわっと柔らかく歌うとか。BODYSLAMのボーカリストのトゥーンさんの歌声を聴きながら研究させていただきました。あと、フィーチャリングって私の中では大サビの前だけを歌うようなイメージでしたが、「LEAVE IT ALL BEHIND」ではずっと歌ってるし、ウージー (Lil Uzi Vert) さんとの「The End (feat. BABYMETAL)」もサビで歌わせてもらっていて。しかも日本語の歌詞が多いんですよね。
SU-METAL: Hm, how can I explain it… like, somewhat of a melancholic feeling? That is, singing parts I might usually sing in a straightforward and direct manner in a softer and more tender style instead. I had a great opportunity to learn by listening to how BODYSLAM vocalist Toon-san sings. Also, I used to think that in a feature, I might only sing the pre-chorus, but in “Leave it All Behind” I basically sang throughout, and in “The End”, we sing the chorus. Also, a lot of the lyrics are in Japanese!
MOAMETAL 日本語の響きが面白いんだろうね。海外のアーティストさんなら普通は英語で歌ってほしいはずなのに、BABYMETALはそれだけ日本の印象が強いというのは面白いなと思います。
MOAMETAL: The sound of the Japanese language is somewhat interesting, I suppose? I would have thought that overseas artists would prefer for us to sing in English when collaborating with them, but that’s apparently not the case. Maybe it’s because BABYMETAL has a distinct impression of Japanese-ness to them. It’s very intriguing.
――沖縄でのツアーファイナル公演「BABYMETAL WORLD TOUR 2023 - 2024 TOUR FINAL IN JAPAN LEGEND-43」は、沖縄サウンドを取り入れた「メタり！！(feat. Tom Morello)」が披露され、新生BABYMETALの進化を象徴するような場面もありましたが、全体的にはこの１年の集大成的な性格が強いライブでした。
At “Legend 43” in Okinawa, “Metali!!” featured Okinawan instruments and sound, which seemed to symbolize the evolution of a new BABYMETAL, but otherwise, it seemed to reflect the character of the entire tour.
MOAMETAL 気持ちよかったね(笑)。
MOAMETAL: It felt really nice. (laughs)
MOMOMETAL そうだね～。
MOMOMETAL: I know, right?~
SU-METAL 本当にそうだね。
SU-METAL: Totally!
MOAMETAL 去年からのツアーは本当によくがんばったなって思った。そんなツアーを乗り越えた自分たちのヒーリングも込めて沖縄でライブをさせてもらったんですけど、いろんな人が沖縄に集まってくれて。海外のファンの方もいたし、本当にみんなでツアーファイナルをお祝いできた感じがしました。横アリの聖誕祭のときは２日間で内容を大きく変えたこともあって、けっこうハードだったんですよ。やることが２倍どころか４倍ぐらい増えて。だけど、沖縄公演はあえて海外ツアーのセトリに近いものにしたからライブ中にワールドツアーのことを思い出したし、やり慣れてるセトリということもあってすごく楽しめました。お客さんも盛り上がってくれたし、やれてよかったですね。
MOAMETAL: We worked really hard on tour last year. We had this opportunity to perform in Okinawa, which was kind of like a rejuvenating healing process after surviving such a grind for a year, and people from all over were able to gather there. There were even some overseas fans, and it really felt like we were celebrating the tour finale together with them. The two-day birthday celebration at Yokohama Arena was quite challenging, as there were major differences in content between the two days. It wasn’t just twice as much work, but more like four times as much work compared to usual. In contrast, for the Okinawa show, we intentionally kept the setlist closer to one that would evoke the overseas tour, and since we were already quite familiar with it, we got to just really enjoy it. The audience was really hyped, and I’m glad we did it this way.

―—１年間、ワールドツアーで磨き上げてきた楽曲たちを最終日に沖縄で披露するというところにグッときました。大げさかもしれないけど、このパフォーマンスのためにこの１年があったんだなと思ってしまうぐらい。
It was quite exciting to see you perform in Okinawa for the finale of the world tour, experiencing songs that had been refined over the past year. This might be overstating it, but it felt like you’d spent the year preparing for it.
MOAMETAL この１年やってきたことはちゃんと糧になっていたんだなって思いました。
MOAMETAL: Our efforts over the past year were a good source of sustenance.
――エイサー隊はめちゃめちゃインパクトがありましたけどね。
The Eisa Team also left quite a strong impression!
NOTE: “Eisa” is a traditional Okinawan style of performance, typically including drums. At Legend 43’s performance of “Metali!!”, an Eisa performance troupe was featured.
MOAMETAL 曲は沖縄仕様のアレンジにしてたけど、エイサー隊の方々の迫力がすごすぎて、お客さんはあんまりちゃんと聴けてないと思うんですよね。それぐらいすごいインパクトでした。
MOAMETAL: Although the arrangement of the song was modified to have more of an Okinawan flavor to it, the Eisa performers were so compelling that I think the audience wasn’t able to fully focus on the music! Their impact was truly remarkable!

継承と革新！新たなメタルフェス「FOX_FEST」を主催するわけ
Inheritance and Innovation! Why did BABYMETAL create the new metal festival “FOX_FEST”?
――そんな “シーサー祭り” の次は、５月25・26日にBABYMETAL初主催の音楽フェスティバル「FOX_FEST」を開催します。まずは開催にあたって率直な思いから聞かせてください。
After “Legend 43”, BABYMETAL will be hosting your very first musical festival “FOX_FEST” on May 25 and 26. I’d like to begin with your honest thoughts about hosting this festival!
MOAMETAL 率直に······ うれしい。BABYMETALってこれまでMETALLICAさんとかJudas Priestさんみたいに、レジェンドの方々のツアー帯同で関わることが多くて、みなさんにはすごくかわいがってもらってきたんですけど、私たちが主催となって同じぐらいの世代のアーティストとか、最近出てきたアーティストを呼べるライブができるようになったってことは、「ちょっとレジェンドに近づいてるってことじゃん！」って。そう考えると、長く続けてきてよかったなと思うし、レジェンドの方々が私たちにしてくれたみたいに、このフェスがみんなが輝くきっかけになったらいいなって思います。
MOAMETAL: My honest thoughts… it makes me so happy. BABYMETAL has toured with legends like Metallica-san and Judas Priest-san, and everyone has treated us wonderfully. And now, having the opportunity to host a festival where artists from our generation or even new up-and-coming artists can perform makes me feel like we’re getting slightly closer to becoming legends in our own way! In that sense, I’m glad that we’ve been able to persevere for so long, and I hope this festival is a chance for everyone to shine, just as the legends created opportunities for us when we were new to the scene.
――「FOX_FEST」という名前は、昨年開催されてBABYMETALも出演したBRING ME THE HORIZONがキュレーションしたフェス「NEX_FEST」を思い起こさせます。メタル系のアーティストだけでなくYOASOBIが出演したり、メタル系のフェスとしてはかなり異色なラインナップで大変盛り上がりましたね。
The name “FOX_FEST” naturally evokes “NEX_FEST” hosted by Bring Me The Horizon last year, where you were featured artists. The lineup was quite unique for a festival, including not only metal artists but YOASOBI as well. It was quite an exciting event!
SU-METAL すごく楽しかったです。本当に念願の「Kingslayer ft. BABYMETAL」をBRING ME THE HORIZONさんと一緒にできたし、ブリングミーさん以外にもいろんなアーティストさんが出られていて、もちろんみなさんメタル寄りなんですけどけっこうジャンルがバラバラだったので、新たな音楽を知ることができてすごく面白かったです。ブリングミーさんって私たちの中では「ちょっと先を行く先輩」というか。
SU-METAL: It was so much fun. We were able to perform “Kingslayer” together with Bring Me The Horizon-san, which is something we had really longed for. There were many other artists of course, and they were all metal-oriented but from a diverse range of genres, and it was eye-opening to learn about new music styles. The way we see it, BMTH are our “senpai” pushing forward ahead of us.

MOAMETAL: To illustrate, they have the honor of headlining at Summer Sonic this year.
SU-METAL 先輩も先輩だし、こんなことを言うのはおこがましいんですけど、これまで一緒に新たなメタルの形をつくってきたという感覚があって。そんな彼らがフェスを主催するということで、「そんな規模にまでいったんだ！」って思ったし、彼らが次の世代を引っ張っていく立場になったことを感じてすごく影響を受けて、彼らの背中を追いたいという気持ちにもなりました。それまでの私たちは正直、自分たちががんばることに必死になってた部分があったけど、次世代のことを考えたり、また新たな可能性を追求していくブリングミーさんの姿にけっこう感化されたところはありますね。
SU-METAL: They are our respected seniors, and it might sound presumptuous of me to say this, but I feel like we’ve been creating new forms of metal music together. When I heard they were organizing their own festival, I marveled at their ability to become so influential, and felt they were in a good position to lead the next generation. We were certainly very much influenced and following in their footsteps in this regard. To be honest, we’ve always been focused on our own efforts, but seeing BMTH’s commitment to thinking about the next generation and pursuing new possibilities has really inspired us.
――「FOX_FEST」も同世代や若い世代のアーティストを意識したラインナップになっているだけではなく、若いリスナーのことを意識していますよね。今回、小学生以上～22歳以下のお客さんへ向けた「FOXチケット」（ディスカウントチケット）を販売するというのはとてもす
てきな試みだと思いました。
“FOX_FEST” features a lineup with artists from your generation and younger, but not only that - it also highlights younger fans as well, right? I thought it was a very neat experiment to sell discounted “Fox Tickets” reserved for fans younger than 22 years old.
MOMOMETAL そうですね。私自身、曲を知らずにライブに行ったとしても、生でライブに触れることで刺激とか影響を受けてそのアーティストさんのことが好きになるので、こういうチケットをきっかけに新しい音楽と出会ってもらえたらいいなという思いがあります。
MOMOMETAL: That’s right. Personally, when I go to a concert, I inevitably fall in love with the artist through the charm of their live performance, even if I don’t know any of their songs, so I hope these tickets will be an opportunity for younger people to encounter new music.

――それでは、メタルの新たな可能性を感じさせる今回の出演アーティストの魅力について教えてください。
Please tell us what you like about these artists showcased at this year’s event, who will be showing us new possibilities in metal!
SU-METAL 実は、ELECTRIC CALLBOYさんは「いいね！」（1stアルバム『BABYMETAL』収録）をつくるときに参考にさせていただいてたんですよ。
SU-METAL: As a matter of fact, Electric Callboy-san was one of the bands we referenced when making “Iine!”.
――それは知りませんでした！
Oh, I didn’t know that!
SU-METAL 実際に彼らのライブを観に行かせてもらったことがあるんですけど、もちろん曲自体もすごく楽しいんですけど、MCも面白いし、お客さんを盛り上げるのもすごく上手で、本当にパーティーというか、「ハッピーメタルってこういう感じなんだな」っていう幸せな雰囲気にあふれているバンドだと思います。だから、今回日本でライブが観られるのがすごく楽しみです。あと、POLYPHIAさんに関しては、ファンのみなさんがご存じなのは私たちの「Brand New Day (feat. Tim Henson and Scott LePage)」だと思うんですけど、彼らの曲は演奏がカッコいいのはもちろんのこと、すごくおしゃれなんですよね。
SU-METAL: We’ve actually been to their concerts before, and the music itself is of course a lot of fun, but their MC is also very funny, and they were quite good at hyping up the crowd. I think they really are a “party band”, creating a happy atmosphere that really makes you believe that this is what happy metal is all about. So I’m really looking forward to seeing them live in Japan. Also, regarding Polyphia, I think the song that our fans are most familiar with would be “Brand New Day”. Their music isn’t just cool, but also very stylish.
MOAMETAL そうだね。
MOAMETAL: That’s true.
SU-METAL だから、夜、お風呂上がりとかリラックスしたいときにワイングラスを持って聴きたい感じがあります(笑)。
SU-METAL: It seems quite fitting to listen to it when you want to relax at night, after bathing with wine glass in hand (laughs).
――あはは！ワインなんですね(笑)。
Ahaha! It’s got to be with wine, eh? (laughs)
SU-METAL 大人な気分に浸りたいときに聴きたいというか。でも、もちろんそれだけじゃなくて、曲にしっかりフックがあるんですよね。リラックスして聴いてたら、「ふんっ！」って引き起こされる感じというか。それもカッコいいし、刺さるポイントがたくさんあるんですよね。
SU-METAL: For when you want to indulge in a more “grown-up” mood, perhaps. But of course, that’s not all there is to it; the songs have solid hooks. When you’re relaxing and listening, it’s like you’ll suddenly be triggered to listen to a particularly cool part, and there are many aspects of their music that are quite attractive.
――なるほど。
I see.
SU-METAL BABYMETALのファンはいろんなジャンルが好きな方が多い印象があるので今回はこの２バンドを挙げたんですけど、彼らだけではなく、今回のフェスの中で新たな「好き」を見つけていただけたらなと思うし、私たちも彼らのパフォーマンスを観て影響を受ける部分がたくさんあるんじゃないかなと思っています。なので、新たな出会いにワクワクしながら来ていただけたらなと思っています。
SU-METAL: I brought up these two bands as an example because my impression is that our fans enjoy diverse genres of metal. However, I hope that this festival is the gateway not just to the specific bands that will be performing, but a discovery of many new things to enjoy. We too might be influenced by their performance! So I hope everyone will come ready and excited for new encounters.
――まだ開催前なのでなんとも言えないとは思うんですけど、国内のメタルファンとしては「FOX_FEST」を定期開催してほしいと思っているはずです。みなさんとしてはどんな気持ちですか。
It’s probably hard to reveal some things because the festival hasn’t even been held yet, but I’m sure domestic Japanese metal fans would want “FOX_FEST” to become a regular occurrence. What do you think?
MOAMETAL もちろんやりたいですけど、私たちはあんまり日本にいないから「NEX_FEST」のほうにお願いしようかな(笑)。
MOAMETAL: We’d of course want to do it regularly, but since BABYMETAL is traveling abroad outside of Japan all the time, perhaps it would be better to put your hopes on "NEX_FEST" instead. (laughs)

SU-METAL 今おっしゃっていたように、まだどうなるかはわからないから、当日会場に来てくださるみなさん次第だと思います！
SU-METAL: As noted before, we really don’t know what the future holds for FOX_FEST; I think it really depends on everyone who comes to the festival!

MOAMETAL 実は、呼びたいバンドはもっとたくさんいて、今回声はかけたけど残念ながらタイミングが合わなかった方々もいるので、今後もいろんなことをやりたいですね。BABYMETALは面白いことをやってナンボだと思ってるので。
MOAMETAL: Actually, there were many more bands we invited and wanted to feature, but the schedule and timing just couldn’t work for some of them. So we want to continue trying out new possibilities in the future. BABYMETAL is all about doing interesting things, after all.
SU-METAL そうだね。今回は新たな挑戦への第一歩というか。
SU-METAL: I agree. I guess you could say that this festival is the first step towards a new challenge.
MOAMETAL ワンマンツアーで海外を回ってると、自分たちからしか刺激を受けられないし、自分たちでしかアドバイスをし合えないから客観視できなくなることが多いんです。だけど、こういうフェスをやることによって、「負けてらんないな！」ってなる気がします。やっぱり、自分たち主催のライブは自分たちが絶対一番いいライブをしたいので！そういう意味でも「FOX_FEST」はいい刺激になって、これからもっとがんばるための活力になると思うので、いろんな人に観に来てほしいです。
MOAMETAL: When we do solo tours overseas, the only source of inspiration is… ourselves. In an echo chamber, it’s easy to lose sight of objectivity. However, by doing festivals like this, I feel like we can get into a more competitive mindset! Considering we’re the host this time, we’re going to be challenged to put on the best show out of all the bands! In that sense, “FOX_FEST” is a good stimulus, and I think it will be a source of energy powering us to work even harder in the future,so I hope all sorts of people will attend.
――聞いたところによると、これが今年国内最後のヘッドラインライブになるそうですね。
From what I’ve heard, this will be your last headlining concert in Japan this year?
MOMOMETAL 会場にいる人たち全員で今年分のエネルギーを燃焼しきるぐらい熱い日にできたらいいなと思います。とにかく楽しみ切りたいです。
MOMOMETAL: I hope we can blow the roof off, and everyone at the venue burns through all the energy they have for this year! I just want everyone to have a great time!

SU-METAL 去年、新生BABYMETALがはじまってワールドツアーを１年間回ってきて、ようやくちゃんとしたチームが出来上がったと思います。聖誕祭のときにいろんな人が「また一つ大きくなったね」「成長して帰ってきたね」って言ってくださったので、BABYMETALは今も「最新が最強」を更新できているのではないかなと。そして、そんな私たちが「FOX_FEST」という初めての主催フェスをやらせていただくんですけど、もちろん出演するのはメタルのアーティストの方々ですけど、その中でもジャンルの幅が広いし、日本ではなかなかライブが観られないようなバンドばかりなんです。当日はスペシャルなことを計画していたりもするので、ハードな音楽に興味がある方にはぜひ来ていただけたらうれしいです。自分の好きな新たな音楽がきっと見つかるんじゃないかと思います。ありがたいことに、BABYMETALは今年も海外からたくさんオファーをいただいている関係で、日本でヘッドライナーとしてステージに立つのは今年はこれが最後になるんですけど、だからこそ私たちは一つ一つのライブを大切にしていきたいですし、みなさんにもBABYMETALのライブを通じて、私たちの成長を見守っていただけたらなと思っています。
SU-METAL: When we started BABYMETAL’s new era last year, we toured the world for a year and became a proper team at last. After “Legend MM”, people remarked that we’d reached the next level, and that we’d made a comeback feeling more grown-up, so I think BABYMETAL has been able to continue with our goal of “better than ever” for each show. (literally: “the newest is the strongest”) And now, with the team finely tuned, we’re hosting our first-ever festival “FOX_FEST”. Of course, the performers are metal-oriented, but there’s a wide range of genres featured, and many of these bands aren’t easily seen live in Japan. We have some special plans for the day, so we’d be delighted if those interested in heavy music would attend - I’m confident you’ll discover new music to love. Thankfully, BABYMETAL has received numerous invitations from abroad as well, which is why this will be the last time we perform as headliners in Japan this year. That is even more of a reason for us to cherish each and every concert, and I hope that through BABYMETAL’s live shows, you can all watch over us as we grow further.
MOMOMETAL 私たちはまた海外に行くんですけども、ツアーでたくさんライブをやらせていただけることを当たり前とは思わずに毎公演全力で臨んで、また日本に帰ってきてライブをするときにはさらに成長した姿を見せれるようにするので、そのときまで楽しみに待っていただけたらなと思います。
MOMOMETAL: We’re going back overseas again, but we never take the opportunity to perform many concerts on tour for granted - our approach is to give each show 100%. When we return to Japan once more, we intend to show that we’ve improved even more! So I hope you look forward to when that time comes!
