結成10周年を迎え、ベストアルバム『10 BABYMETAL YEARS」をリリースするBABYMETALグローバルアーティストとしてブレイクするきっかけとなった「ギミチョコ!!」をはじめ、これまでのミュージックビデオやライブ映像作品について、BABYMETAL、プロデューサーのKOBAMETAL、BABYMETALの振り付けを手がけるMIKIKOMETALによる「10 VIDEO SELECTIONS」を届ける!

BABYMETAL celebrates their 10th anniversary with the release of the Best Album “10 BABYMETAL YEARS”, and considering the Music Video of “Gimme Choco!!” helped lead to their global breakthrough, now is a good time to revisit the various music videos and other video performances with BABYMETAL, their producer KOBAMETAL, and their choreographer MIKIKOMETAL in this special “10 Video Selections” interview!

MV「ギミチョコ!!」 2014.2.26公開

Music Video: “Gimme Choco!!” (released February 26th, 2014)

KOBAMETAL これはミュージックビデオという形態になっていますけど、ライブMVですね。「LEGEND “1997" SU-METAL聖誕祭」という幕張メッセイベントホールで行われたライブの映像から抜粋したんですけど、実はこの日が初披露だったので、正直、パフォーマンスも全然固まっていない状態だったんですね。それをそのままミュージックビデオにしたら、バズってしまったという。わからないものだなと(笑)。ライブに来たお客さんも当然この曲を知らないわけですけど盛り上がってくれて、これもまたわからないものですね。

KOBAMETAL: Although it takes the form of a Music Video, the footage is from a live performance, taken from the video of the “Legend 1997 SU-METAL’s Birthday” show at Makuhari Messe. It was actually the debut performance of the song, and to be honest, we hadn't really refined the song to completion yet. We made a Music Video out of it, and it became quite the sensation. I guess you just never know (laughs)! Of course, the audience at the concert didn’t know the song, but they were pumped up for it nonetheless, so you really never know what will happen.

なぜライブ映像を使うことになったんですか。

Why did you decide to use video from a live performance?

KOBAMETAL 2014年に1stアルバム『BABYMETAL』がリリースされるタイミングで、それのPR用として考えていたんですけど、スタジオに入って撮影するよりはライブMVがいいだろうという判断で。

KOBAMETAL: The timing was right for the release of our first album BABYMETAL in 2014, and we were thinking of using it as a promotional tool, but decided that a live Music Video would be better than shooting in the studio.

ライブ映像作品『LIVE IN LONDON - BABYMETAL WORLD TOUR 2014 - 』 2015.5.20発売

Live Performance: “Live in London - BABYMETAL World Tour 2014” (released May 20th, 2015)

KOBAMETAL これは2014年に初めて欧米ツアーという形で海外に出ていったときのライブで、7月7日にロンドンで行った「BABYMETAL WORLD TOUR 2014」The Forum 公演と11月8日に同じくロンドンで行った「BABYMETAL BACK TO THE USA/UK TOUR 2014] O2 Academy Brixton公演が収められています。イギリスは独特なオーディエンスのノリがあって、BABYMETALが最初に登場したときから、アウェイどころかホーム感が満載で、お客さんの歓声もすごく大きくて、あまり不安がないというか、楽しみしかないような状況だった印象ですね。The Forum は Zepp Tokyoほどは広くなくて、昔の渋谷AXぐらいのサイズ感だったと思うんですけど、日本とは違うホーム感にあふれていて、言葉で言い表せないような感覚でした。The Forum公演は日本でのライブビューイング用に収録のカメラが入っていたので、そのまま映像化しようという流れでしたね。

KOBAMETAL: This was a live performance from our first European and American tour in 2014, featuring the “BABYMETAL World Tour 2014” performance at The Forum in London on July 7th, and the “BABYMETAL Back to the USA/UK Tour 2014” performance at the O2 Academy Brixton in London on November 8th. The UK has a unique audience atmosphere, and from the moment BABYMETAL first appeared on stage, it felt more like a home show than away, and the audience cheered with all their might. There wasn’t much anxiety, and you couldn’t help but have a good time. The Forum wasn’t as big as Zepp Tokyo, but more like Shibuya AX before it closed down. Still, it was filled with a sense of home that wasn’t exactly like Japan, but a feeling I can’t describe in words. The Forum show was recorded for a live viewing in Japan, so we decided to make a video from it. 

Brixton公演はどういう経緯で開催されたんですか。

How did the Brixton show come about?

KOBAMETAL 7月のライブの反応がかなりよくて、アメリカとイギリスそれぞれのプロモーターから「早くまたライブをやったほうがいいよ」という話があって、急きょ追加公演みたいな形で行いました。一番印象深いのは「Road of Resistance」を初めて披露したことですね。次のステージへステップアップする節目の曲でしたし、この曲をここで初披露したんです。実は、当日のリハでちょっとアレンジを変えていて。間奏のコールアンドレスポンスで、お客さんに声を挙げてもらうパートがあるんですけど、日本では音を止めないでずーっと演奏が続くCDと同じアレンジで練習していたんですけど、当日リハーサルをしているときに、会場の独特な雰囲気とか、お客さんへの期待感とか、これは一度バンドの音を止めて、みんな一緒にアカペラでウォーウォーしたほうがすごくメモリアルなものになるんじゃないかなって思って、急きょアレンジを変えたんですよね。お客さんが知らない曲をいきなり披露して、しかも一緒に歌わせるという無茶ぶりだったので、「果たしてこれは成功するのかな？」という懸念もあったんですけど、BABYMETALならやれそうだということと、イギリスのオーディエンスなら応えてくれるんじゃないかという期待もあってチャレンジしてみました。

KOBAMETAL: The response to the show in July was so good that the promoters in both the U.S. and UK told us that we should do another show soon, so we scrambled to put on an extra concert. The most memorable moment was the debut of “Road of Resistance” - it was a milestone song for us to step up to the next stage, and we felt it was a suitable venue to do so for the first time. Actually, we changed the arrangement slightly during the rehearsal session on the day of the performance. In Japan, we had practiced the arrangement as it was on the CD, but as we rehearsed right before the show, we felt that the unique atmosphere of the venue and the resulting expected response from the audience could be anticipated, so we felt it would be more memorable if we had the band stop playing and had the audience to raise their voices and sing “Whoa~” with us. So this was a really last-minute change. It was a crazy idea to suddenly perform a song that the audience had never heard before, and expect them to sing along! I had some concerns about whether this would be successful, but I thought that BABYMETAL would be able to do it, and hoped the UK audience would respond accordingly, so we just went for it.

BABYMETALは海外で初披露する曲がけっこうありますよね。しかも、ウェンブリー・アリーナやアメリカ(ロサンゼルス)のTHE FORUMでは、アルバムリリースの翌日や当日に新曲を初披露していて、一見無茶な挑戦をしているようにも思えたんですが。

Several BABYMETAL songs made their debut overseas. Moreover, at Wembley Arena and The Forum in Los Angeles, you performed new songs for the first time on the day of or day after the album release, which seems like quite a reckless challenge!

KOBAMETAL ああ、たしかに。「DA DA DANCE (feat. Tak Matsumoto)」の初披露もアメリカのTHE FORUMでしたからね。

KOBAMETAL: Ah, that’s right. The first performance of “DA DA DANCE” was at The Forum in America indeed.

まだ曲が浸透していない状態で、しかも海外のアリーナ公演という重要な場所で初披露するというのは相当チャレンジングだと思ったんですが、チームとしてはそこまで大きなハードルとはとらえていなかったんでしょうか。

I imagine it would be quite a challenge to perform a song for the first time in an important overseas arena, particularly because the song is unknown, but I guess the team didn’t think it would be an insurmountable hurdle?

KOBAMETAL たしかに、お客さんからすると曲を聴き込む時間すらない状態でライブに臨む感じにはなってしまうんですけど、BABYMETAL的には何カ月も前からスタジオでやり込んできている曲なので、プロジェクト全体の空気感でこのタイミングがいいんじゃないのかなと判断したところはありますね。おっしゃるように、もうちょっと曲が浸透してからやるほうがもっと楽しめるということもあるかもしれないですけど、BABYMETAL的にはライブで曲を育てていくという考え方が大きいので、早いタイミングで披露して、どんどんブラッシュアップするほうがいいかなと思っています。パフォーマンスするほうとしては、お客さんの前でパフォーマンスする回数を増やすというのが曲を育てていく上で一番大事なことだと思っているので。

KOBAMETAL: It’s true that for the audience, it’s a live performance where they haven’t had a chance to listen to the songs beforehand. But for BABYMETAL, we’ve already been working on these songs in the studio for months in advance, so that helps us determine when the timing is right to release something as a whole. As you say, it might be more enjoyable for the audience if they already know the song well, but BABYMETAL’s way is to develop a song through the live performances, so I think it’s better to perform at a relatively early stage and refine it further. For performers, I think the most important thing is to perform in front of an audience as often as possible in order to nurture and complete the song.

MV [Road of Resistance] 2015.5.7公開

Music Video: “Road of Resistance” (released May 7th, 2015)

これは、2015年1月に行われた「LEGEND“2015”~新春キツネ祭り~」の映像ですね。

This video is from the “Legend 2015 New Year’s Fox Festival” performance in January, 2015.

KOBAMETAL これもライブ MV扱いになる曲で、しかも8分以上あるんですね(笑)。曲の最後にあるお客さんとの掛け合いまで入れているのでかなり長いですね。スタジオで撮影するミュージックビデオもいいんですけど、ライブのほうがステージセットやお客さんとのコールアンドレスポンスといったBABYMETALを構成している要素がぎゅっと詰まっているので、BABYMETALの魅力を伝えるにはライブMVがわかりやすくていいなと思います。

KOBAMETAL: This song is also treated as a live music video, and it’s over 8 minutes long (laughs). It’s so long because it includes the extended audience interaction towards the end of the song. Music Videos shot in the studio are also good, but the live videos are packed with more elements that make up BABYMETAL, such as the stage sets and the call-and-response with the fans, so I think live music videos are better for conveying the charm of BABYMETAL.

しっかり映像映えするセットと演出ですよね。

The set and production looks great on film.

KOBAMETAL スタッフのみなさんの力もありますし、お客さんの盛り上がりも演出の要素に入っていると思うんですよね。そういうものがすべてあいまって完成しているビデオだと思います。

KOBAMETAL: This is all thanks to the efforts of our hardworking staff, and the excitement of the audience, which is something we take into consideration during production.These things all come together to complete a video.

MV 「THE ONE」 2016.3.27公開

Music Video: “THE ONE” (released March 27th, 2016)

KOBAMETAL これは2015年の〈TRILOGYシリーズ〉と呼ばれていた3本のライブのひとつで、年末に横浜アリーナで行われたライブの映像です。〈TRILOGYシリーズ〉は〈メタルレジスタンス第3章〉 にちなんで「3」という数字をテーマにしていて、横浜アリーナ公演では、3体のキツネ様のオブジェが並んでいる頂点に三角錐のピラミッドが象徴的なシンボルとして君臨しているというセットでした。そのピラミッドは可動式の乗り物になっていて、この曲ではメンバーがそれに乗って場内を一周するという演出で。これはこの日のエンディング曲だったんですが、ゆったりとした曲調なので、どうやって映像のなかでスケール感を出していくか、どうやってミュージックビデオとして成立させるか、ということを話し合った記憶があります。

KOBAMETAL: This video was from a live performance at Yokohama Arena towards the end of the year, as one of the three “Trilogy series” shows in 2015. The theme of the series was the number “3”, referring to “Metal Resistance Chapter 3”, and at the Yokohama Arena show, the set consisted of three fox-like objects with a triangular pyramid reigning at the top as a symbol. The pyramid was a movable vehicle upon which the members flew around the venue during the song. As it was the closing song of the day, I remember discussing how to create a sense of scale in the video, and how to make it work as a Music Video, since the song had a more relaxed tone.

MV [Distortion (feat. Alissa White-Gluz)] 2018.5.7公開

Music Video: “Distortion (feat. Alissa White-Gluz)” (released May 7th, 2018)

KOBAMETAL メンバーの稼働がなかなかできないタイミングだったので、新しいチャレンジということも含めて、BABYMETALの楽曲の世界観をこれまでと違う形で表現しようということで作ったミュージックビデオです。テーマは〈ディストピア〉で、崩壊してしまった世界で再び新たな挑戦がはじまるというものでした。映像単体で見てもかなりクオリティが高いと思います。スタイリストさんやメイクさんやクリエイティブのチームにいろいろ考えていただいて、その後もこのチームとは引き続き3rdアルバム『METAL GALAXY』でもご一緒させてただいて、2018年の〈THE CHOSEN SEVEN〉のライブでは衣装も含めてビジュアル面のプロデュースをしていただきました。そういうこともあって、それまでとは違うタイプの見え方だったんです。SABATONやGALACTIC EMPIREを迎えた「BABYMETAL WORLD TOUR 2018 in JAPAN」も同じチームでやりましたが、これまでとは全然違うアナザーストーリーになったと思います。こういう解説をほとんどしないので、お客さんからすると「これはどういう意味なんだろう?」という感じだったと思いますが。

KOBAMETAL: The timing was such that it was difficult for the girls to get up and running, so we decided to take on a new challenge and express the world of BABYMETAL’s music in a completely different way. The theme was “dystopia”, where a new challenge emerged in a collapsed world. I think the quality of the video itself is quite high. The stylists, make-up artists, and creative team put a lot of thought into it, and we continued to work with them on the third album Metal Galaxy. They also helped produce the visuals - including the costumes - for the 2018 live performance of The Chosen Seven (Dark Night Carnival Extra Show). Because of this attention to detail, we were able to create something very different, compared to before. BABYMETAL World Tour 2018 in Japan with Sabaton and Galactic Empire was also done by the same team, and that made it possible to tell “another story” for those concerts. I rarely explain these things, so I guess the audience might wonder, “what does this all mean?!”

あまり説明はしたくないんですか?

You don’t want to explain much, do you?

KOBAMETAL 絵画を鑑賞するみたいなことに近くて、説明しすぎることで受け取る側のイマジネーションに制限がかかってしまうことを避けるため、答え合わせをするよりも受け取る側がいろいろと考える余地があったほうが良いと思っています。もちろん、こうやってある程度の解説はできますけど、それが 100%の正解かというとそういうことではないですし、僕の話も話半分で聞いていただくほうがいいと思います(笑)。解釈の違いも含め、それがエンタテインメントのおもしろいところですよね。

KOBAMETAL: It’s similar to appreciating a painting - in order to avoid limiting the imagination of the viewer by explaining too much, I think it’s better if the recipient has more room to think about various things, rather than trying to hone in on a specific answer. Of course, I can explain some things like I’m doing now, but that doesn’t mean that my explanations are 100% correct, and I think it’s better to listen to what I say with a healthy dose of skepticism (laughs). This is one of the interesting things about entertainment - the differences in interpretation.

MV [PA PA YA!! (feat. F.HERO)] 2019.7.1公開

Music Video: “PA PA YA!! (feat. F.HERO)” (released July 1st, 2019)

KOBAMETAL これもライブ MVです。2018年の〈ダークサイド〉期を経て、新しいスタイルへと進化するためのスタートを切るライブで初めて披露した楽曲です。「Road of Resistance」や「THE ONE」と同じように、「こういうパフォーマンスをしたら、お客さんはこういうリアクションをしてくれるのでは」という前提があって、それを踏まえた上でミュージックビデオを撮影しようと決めていました。実際、初披露ではあったんですけど、こちらのイメージどおりにお客さんにリアクションしていただけたので、非常にいいビデオになったと思っています。

KOBAMETAL: This was another live Music Video. It was a song we performed at the first live concert which would kick off the evolution towards a new style after the “Dark Side” period of 2018. As with “Road of Resistance” and “THE ONE”, we assumed the audience might react in a certain way when we performed the song, and decided to film the Music Video based on that assumption. As a matter of fact, the audience reacted exactly as we had imagined to its debut, so I think it turned out to be quite a good video.

MV (Elevator Girl [English ver.]] 2019.8.16公開)

Music Video: “Elevator Girl (English ver.)” (released August 16th, 2019)

KOBAMETAL この曲は［English ver.］として『METAL GALAXY』の海外盤に収録されているんですけど、それをPRするための映像がほしいというリクエストが海外のレーベルからあって、2018年から先出しで海外ツアーでも披露していた曲だったので、ライブ感を重視して、ライブで撮影したものを編集して作りました。

KOBAMETAL: The English version of this song was included on the overseas edition of Metal Galaxy, so the overseas label requested a video to help promote it. Since the song had been performed on overseas tours since 2018, we focused on live performances, and edited and made a video using live footage.

MV (Shanti Shanti Shanti] 2019.9.27公開

Music Video: “Shanti Shanti Shanti” (released September 29th, 2019)

KOBAMETAL これは、リアルタイムエフェクトをうまく織り交ぜた横浜アリーナでのライブ映像(2019年6月 28・29日開催の「BABYMETAL AWAKENS - THE SUN ALSO RISES - 」) を使って、『METAL GALAXY』 リリース前のPR用に作りました。このアルバムはライブ映像から切り出したミュージックビデオが多かったですね。

KOBAMETAL: This was made for promotional purposes before the release of Metal Galaxy, using live video from the Yokohama Arena show (BABYMETAL Awakens - The Sun Also Rises, June 28th & 29th, 2019) with real-time effects mixed in. There were a lot of music videos edited from live footage for this album.

でも、各楽曲の映像の世界観がしっかりしているから、似たような作品にはならないですよね。

Even so, since each song has a strong distinct visual message, they weren’t all that similar.

KOBAMETAL 映像を作ってくださるクリエイターさんが何チームかあって、曲ごとにクリエイターさんが違うんですよ。そういった意味で、それぞれのチームのキャラクターが出ている部分はあるかもしれないですね。このビデオにも登場するリアルタイムエフェクトでは、カメラでいったんライブ映像を取り込んで、それにリアルタイムでエフェクトをかけて、もう一度映像に戻すようなことをやっているみたいですね。

KOBAMETAL: There are several teams of creators who make the videos, and each song has a different creator as well. In that sense, the character of each team can be seen in various places. The real-time effects that appear in this video were done by capturing live video with a camera, applying effects to it in real-time, and putting it back in the video.

新しい技術はどんどん試していきたいという気持ち は強いですか。

Do you have a strong desire to try out new technologies?

KOBAMETAL そうですね。BABYMETALにハマるものもあればハマらないものもあると思いますけど、チャレンジできるのであればなるべくやっていきたいと思っています。

KOBAMETAL: I do. I’m sure there are some things that I’ll incorporate into BABYMETAL, and some things I won’t, but I’d like to do everything I can to challenge myself.

MV 「DA DA DANCE (feat. Tak Matsumoto)」 2019.12.16公開

Music Video: “DA DA DANCE (feat. Tak Matsumoto)” (released December 16th, 2019)

これは2019年10月11日に米・ロサンゼルスで行われたBABYMETAL初の北米アリーナ公演「METAL GALAXY WORLD TOUR LIVE AT THE FORUM」をメインに切り出したライブ映像ですね。

This music video primarily used footage from BABYMETAL’s first North American arena show “Metal Galaxy World Tour Live at The Forum” in Los Angeles, U.S.A. on October 1th, 2019.

KOBAMETAL この日が初披露で、しかもアルバム『METAL GALAXY』のリリース当日にみなさん初めて聴いた曲のはずなのによく成立したなという感じですね (笑)。しかもこの日の歌唱曲としては1曲目でしたからね。

KOBAMETAL: This was the first time the song was ever performed, and it was the first time fans would hear it on the day of Metal Galaxy’s release. I’m amazed it worked out the way it did (laughs). Moreover, it was the first song they sang that day.

お客さんもサビの扇子の振りを真似してくれているという。

The audience also imitated the “swinging fan” dance move in the chorus.

KOBAMETAL これをどこで身につけたんでしょうね。適応能力が高いですよね (笑)。2コーラス目ではすでに振りが入っちゃっている感じで。

KOBAMETAL: I wonder where they learned it - they’re very quick to adapt (laughs). By the second chorus, they had already learned the choreography.

よく見ると、1コーラス目でも振っている人がいますね。

If you look closely, you can see some people dancing along and shaking the “fan” even in the first chorus.

KOBAMETAL ああ、そういえば、このビデオはTHE FORUM公演と、このあとにBRING ME THE HORIZONと回った日本ツアーでの映像がミックスさ れているんです。なので、よく見るとステージの形もちょっと違うんです。

KOBAMETAL: Ah, come to think of it, this video is a mix of footage from The Forum show, and the Japan tour with Bring Me The Horizon that followed. If you look closely, you’ll see that the shape of the stage is slightly different.

そうだったんですね！これも映像演出がすごくて、スタジオで新たに撮るのがもったいないぐらい完成されています。

Oh, you’re right! The video production was so perfect that it would be a waste of time to shoot a new video in the studio.

KOBAMETAL そうですね。LEDのサイズがものすごく大きいので、巨大スクリーンの前でパフォーマンスするほうがスケール感が出ますからね。あとは照明の存在も大きいです。LEDの映像だけだとメリハリがなくなってしまうんですけど、そこに生のライブ照明が足されることで、奥行きなんかも変わっていますね。

KOBAMETAL: Indeed. The LEDs are so massive, performing in front of a huge screen gives a sense of scale. The lighting is also a big factor. If you only use LED images, you can lose the sense of depth, but when you add live lighting, it changes the depth.

MV (BxMxC] 2020.10.9公開

Music Video: “BxMxC” (released October 9th, 2020)

これは、ライブビデオが続いてきたなかで久しぶりのスタジオ撮影となった作品です。『METAL GALAXY』の海外盤には未収録の上に、BABYMETALとしては異色な曲をピックアップしたことに驚きました。

This was the first Music Video in a long time that was shot in a studio. I was surprised that you selected such a unique song - even by BABYMETAL standards - especially since it wasn’t included on the international version of Metal Galaxy.

KOBAMETAL これはアルバム収録曲の中でも最後にできた曲で、もともとアルバムに入れる予定はなかったんです。最後にできた曲ということは一番新しい曲ということでもあるので、BABYMETALのタイム感としては、これを今やるのがいいのかなと。あと、ヨーロッパツアーに行ったり、2020年はコロナがなければほかにもいろいろライブやフェスに出演する予定があったので、その前にアルバムの後押しをする意味合いもあって制作しました。

KOBAMETAL: It was the last song to be recorded for the album, and we originally didn’t plan to include it. The fact that it was the last song also meant it was the most recent one, so I thought it would be a good choice for a new BABYMETAL video. Also, we were going on a European tour, and if it weren’t for COVID in 2020, we were going to perform at many other live concerts and festivals, so it was intended to be a boost for the album.

この曲はライブでかなり化けましたよね。

The song became quite a hit in live shows, didn’t it?

KOBAMETAL そうですね。いろんな要素があいまって。先ほども言いましたが、メンバーも練習スタジオでやるのとお客さんの前でやるのとでは全然感覚が違うと思うんです。実際にライブでやってみて、「ああ、こういうリアクションなんだ」「バンドはこういう音になるんだ」ということを体感してから、さらにブラッシュアップしていくという感じだと思うので、どんどんライブで成長していく曲になったんだろうなと思います。

KOBAMETAL: Indeed. It’s a combination of many factors. As I mentioned earlier, I think the girls feel completely different in front of an audience, compared to rehearsing in the studio. When they actually perform the song live, they experience the audience’s reaction and the sound of the band viscerally, and use it to refine the song even further.

3月にヨーロッパから帰ってきてすぐに撮ったということもあってか、ふたりの表情がかなり引き締まっていてカッコいいです。

Perhaps it was because the video was shot right after returning from Europe in March - the expressions on SU-METAL and MOAMETAL’s faces were very cool.

KOBAMETAL 1月の幕張メッセ公演からヨーロッパツアーまで何十本というライブでやり込んでから収録しているので、これまでの初披露のライブ映像を使ったものとはひと味違いますよね。

KOBAMETAL: It’s a bit different from the previous videos that used live footage from the band’s earlier performances, since it was recorded after they had already completed dozens of live shows, starting from the Makuhari Messe concert in January (Legend Metal Galaxy) and continuing through the European tour.

この〈天下一メタル武道会〉というコンセプトは？

How did you come up with the concept of the “Tenkaichi Metal Budokai”? (Metal Martial Arts Contest)

KOBAMETAL このMVに関しては複数のクリエイターが参加していて、自分は監督というかプロデュースという立場で参加しています。この曲のテーマはメタルサイファー、例えるならば映画『8 Mile』とかテレビ番組「フリースタイルダンジョン」みたいなラップバトルなんですけど、そのままヒップホップのスタイルでやるのではなく、それをメタルに置き換えたらどうなるんだろうというコンセプトで、BABYMETALがラップバトル会場、つまり天下一メタル武道会に乗り込んでいって、ガチメタルの格好をした敵をバッサバッサと倒していって、最後でラスボスに勝利して天下統一するというストーリーを作りました。

KOBAMETAL: The music video was the product of several creators, and my role as producer was kind of like that of a director. The theme of this song is a metal cypher; a rap battle like in the movie “8 Mile” or the TV show “Freestyle Dungeon”, but instead of doing it hip-hop style, the concept was to see what would happen if we replaced it with metal. So we created a story in which BABYMETAL enters a rap battle venue - the Tenkaichi Metal Budokai - defeat metal "gatekeepers", and finally overcome the final boss to unify the world.

KOBAMETAL BABYMETAL という存在自体、いわゆる王道なメタルではないじゃないですか。『8 Mile』でもそういう要素がストーリーにあったと思うんですけど、メタル界の異端児BABYMETALがメタルのフィールドでガチで戦って勝ち上がっていく姿をイメージして作っていて、そこにはBABYMETALが2010年から歩んできた「道なき道」的な要素も入っているんです。

KOBAMETAL: The existence of BABYMETAL itself is not the so-called “mainstream metal”. I think “8 Mile” also had that element in its story, but I imagined BABYMETAL, which is sort of a heretic in the metal world, fighting hard and winning in the metal realm. There’s also the element of the “unmarked road” that BABYMETAL has followed since 2010.

KOBAMETAL 最初はメタラーのギャラリーがメンバーの周りを取り囲んで、「こいつら、どれぐらいメタルができるんだ......？」みたいな感じで静観してるんですけど、バトルが進むにつれてみんなが熱狂していって、最後にラスボスを倒して大団円を迎えて、ふたりが神輿の上に乗って祭り上げられるという。例えば映画『ジョーカー』の最後のシーンで、主人公が車で暴動真っただ中の 町に突入していって、車の上に立ち上がった彼に群衆が賛同を示すシーンがあるんですけど、このビデオではそんなイメージに近いですね。メインストリームじゃなかった人たちが、自分たちの信念を曲げずに戦って、打ち勝って、成り上がっていくストーリーはヒップホップの王道パターンですけど、それをメタルに置き換えたんです。だからこれは、BABYMETAL 版『8 Mile』ですね。

KOBAMETAL: At first, they’re surrounded by a crowd of metalheads, watching passively, like “how metal can these girls really be…?” But as the battle progresses, everyone gets more and more hyped, and in the end, when the final boss is defeated and they reach the grand finale, the two of them are lifted up and celebrate on a portable shrine. For example, in the final scene of the movie “The Joker”, the main character drives into town in the middle of a riot, and the crowd shows their approval as he stands up on top of the car. The story of people that weren’t in the mainstream, fighting for their beliefs, overcoming obstacles, and rising to the top - it’s a fairly common pattern in hip-hop, but I replaced it with metal. So this is BABYMETAL’s version of “8 Mile”.
