2023 PMC Vol.27 Su & Moa discuss the songs of THE OTHER ONE

1. METAL KINGDOM

自らを奮い立たせ、信じる友と未知なる道へ踏み出す強さを手にした、新たな時代を切り拓くアンセム。まさに沈黙の玉座から力強く立ち上がり、世界に鳴り響く、はじまりを告げるファンファーレ。
This is an anthem to open up a new era for the ones who encouraged themselves and acquired the strength to step forward with their authentic friends to the path to the unknown. This is the very fanfare telling the beginning that forcefully arose from the silent throne and resound to the world.
MOAMETAL 王道のメタルって感じがしますね。強い感じがする。あと、〈後ろ向きな言葉や 戻る道はいらない 光あるあの場所で 明日を生きろ〉というフレーズが振りとすごくシンクロしているんですよ。振りがついたことですごく好きな歌詞になりました。これまでBABYMETALはネガティブな言葉を投げかけられることもあったけど、私たちが大好きな人たちのことを思う時間を大切にするためにこれまで進んできたので、そんな意志が感じられるこの曲がすごく大切になりました。
MOAMETAL: This one feels like a more straightforward metal song, and it’s quite powerful. The lines “You don’t need words of regret or a path of retreat. Live your future in a place full of lights” sync up very well with the choreography, and it makes me like the lyrics even more. BABYMETAL has been the subject of criticism in the past, but we’re made it this far by cherishing the time we spend with the people we love, and this determination can be felt in this song, and it’s an important one for us.
SU-METAL この曲こそライブで完成したよね。こないだ公開されたミュージックビデオは、「BABYMETAL RETURNS - THE OTHER ONE -」(幕張メッセ国際展示場) のライブ映像なんですけど、それを観て、「あ、こんなふうになってたんだ！」って思いました(笑)。お客さんの力があってこその曲だなって思いました。
SU-METAL: This song was incomplete before it was performed live. The MV released the other day featured live footage from “BABYMETAL RETURNS - THE OTHER ONE”. I thought to myself, “Oh, I didn’t know it was going to feel like this!” (laughs) I believe this song was made possible through the power of the audience.
2. Divine Attack - 神撃 -

The time has come. ついに時はきた。道なき道を進んできたBABYMETALが、次に進む道はどこなのか。まさに闘いに向けて、未来に向けて駆け出す騎馬隊のような疾走感あふれる楽曲。
The time has come.
Transcending many barriers and creating many legends, where will BABYMETAL head next? The power and dynamism of the song depicts a cavalry preparing for their future battle.
SU-METAL 作詞をしています。作詞にあたっては、BABYMETALの音楽は日本の方はもちろん、海外の方からも多く聴かれているので、やっぱり響きがきれいなほうがいいなというのはありました。最初は言葉やメッセージを重視して書いていたんですけど、それに合わせて響きを作っていったというか。私は、母音の響きとか子音によってアクセントが変わるということをこれまで全然知らなかったんです。でも、「この言葉はどうしても変えたくない」みたいなところもありました。
SU-METAL: I wrote the lyrics for this song. Many people in Japan and around the world listen to BABYMETAL’s music, so I knew I wanted it to have a beautiful sound. At first, my emphasis was on the words themselves, or the messages conveyed, taking into account how their sounds fit with the music. Before now, I’d been ignorant of how accents vary depending on the sounds of vowels or consonants used. That said, although taking into account such rules, there were a few cases where I insisted on a certain word no matter what.
―この歌詞で興味深いのが〈It's time to go your way〉と歌っているところで。みんなで一緒に向かうことを意味する〈go our way〉でも歌詞の内容としては成立するのかなと思ったんですけど、あえて〈go your way〉にしたのにはどんな思いがあるんでしょう?
“It’s time to go your way” is an interesting line from the song. I imagined it could have been “go our way” instead, meaning everyone would go together. What was your thought process here?
SU-METAL たしかに「自分が先頭を切って、みんなを引き連れて前に進むんだ」というテーマがこの曲にはあるから、〈私たち〉にしたほうがいいのかもしれないんですけど、「それも自分の決めつけだな」と思ったんです。BABYMETALの音楽を聴いているファンの方の中でも、「この曲は好きだけどこの曲は嫌い」みたいにそれぞれの意見があるし、BABYMETALの全てを無理やり肯定する必要はないんですね。だから当然、このアルバムにも好きな曲と嫌いな曲があってもいいと思っていて。つまり、そこにいるからそのまま流されるんじゃなくて、自分の意志でちゃんとついてきてほしいんです。あと、誰かが一人でこの曲を聴いたときに「がんばろう」「自分の道を開くんだ」って思えるような、その人の力になれるような言葉を探したいという思いもありました。確かに「みんなで行こう」と言っている雰囲気だけど、個人を尊重してるんです。
SU-METAL: It’s true that the theme of the song is to “lead the way and bring everyone with us as we move forward”. I considered if it was better to use “we”, but then I thought, “that’s their decision to make”. BABYMETAL fans have their own opinions about our songs, and might like this song but dislike that one. There’s no need to force them to agree with everything BABYMETAL does. So I think it’s okay to have songs you like and dislike on this album as well. In other words, if fans continue to follow us from now on, I want it to be an active decision of free will on their part, and not just because they happened to be there. Also, I wanted to find words that could let someone listening to the song feel inspired to never give up, and to open their own path forward. I want words that will stand by such a person. It’s true that the atmosphere of the song says “Let’s go together”, but it also respects individual choice.
3. Mirror Mirror

鏡よ鏡。鏡の中の世界と現実の世界を行ったり来たりする、まさにパラレルワールドを体現している楽曲。鏡に映る自分が見ているのは、本当の自分なのか、こうありたいと願う自分なのか?
Mirror, mirror on the wall...this song embodies a parallel world where the world inside the mirror and the world of reality go back and forth. Is what you see in the mirror your true self or the self you wish to be?
SU-METAL これは最初に一番好きだと思った曲ですね。
SU-METAL: This was my favorite song at first.
MOAMETAL このアルバムの中ではサウンド的に一番BABYMETALっぽいのかなって。
MOAMETAL: Out of all the songs on this album, this one sounds closest to what you might have expected from BABYMETAL.
SU-METAL 最初はポップに聴こえるんだけど、なんかちょっと歪というか。それは変拍子のリズムによってそう聴こえるんですよね。歌詞は「鏡に映っている自分は本当の自分なのか？」というのがテーマなんですけど、パッと聴いた感じは明るい世界なのにちょっと曲がってそうっていう。この曲は半分英語詞、半分日本語詞なんですけど、二つの言語によって人間の二面性が表現されてるのかなと勝手に思っていたりするんですけど、そういう言語の使い分けはこれまでやってこなかったから面白いなと思ってます。あと、BメロのMOAMETALのパートも好きです(笑)。
SU-METAL: It sounds poppy at first, but it’s also somewhat distorted. The rhythm of the odd time signature is what creates that sensation. The lyrics explore the theme of whether or not the person you see in the mirror is your true self. On first listen, it sounds like a bright world, but in fact, you’ll find it seems slightly twisted. It’s half in Japanese and half in English, and using two languages helps express the duality of human nature. It’s quite interesting because we’ve never tried to use the two languages in this way before. I also like MOAMETAL’s part in the bridge (laughs).
4.MAYA

現実は幻、真実はまやかし。現実世界 (Real World) と仮想世界 (Virtual World) の狭間を行き来し、迷い込んでしまったかのような感覚。それは魔法かもしれないし、幻想かもしれない。
Reality becomes an illusion. Truth becomes a fake. Feels as if straying into the gap between the real world and a virtual world while going back and forth between them. It might be magic, or might be reverie.
SU-METAL このアルバムの中盤ブロックは、ある意味で〈THE OTHER ONE〉の核心を担っていると思っていて。自分が見ている世界は本当に見たままの姿なのかっていう強いメッセージがこのアルバムにはあるんです。この曲もまさにそういうことを歌っているんですよ。特に〈How would you know〉からはじまる中盤の英語パート。「あなたが見てる世界って幻なんじゃないの？」みたいな表現は、これまでのBABYMETALには出てこなかったものです。サウンド面で言うと、声が煙の中へ消えてしまいそうなんだけど、「たしかにそこに存在している」みたいなところが好きですね。あとは、MOAMETALの声と私の声の掛け合いも好きです。
SU-METAL:This song is the middle block of the album - or in other words, the core of THE OTHER ONE overall. A strong theme in this album is about whether the world really is what we see, and this song explores this question directly, particularly the English part in the middle of the song that asks how would you know that the world you’re seeing isn’t an illusion. This is something new to BABYMETAL. In terms of the music, I like the way our voices seem to disappear into the smoke, but can still be felt somewhere within. I also like the interplay between MOAMETAL’s voice and mine.
―今作の収録曲は過去の作品以上に考える時間が必要なものなんですね。
The songs in this album require a bit more thought than your past works, don’t they?
SU-METAL 全体的にそうかもしれない。ずっと向き合っていると頭がおかしくなりそうになります(笑)。自問自答がすごい。〈THE OTHER ONE〉は新たなBABYMETALの世界だと言いつつも、自分と向き合う時間でもあるっていうすごく不思議なパラレルワールドなんですよね。私は今作でパラレルワールドのBABYMETALにいる自分と向き合い続けているのかもしれないし、それができるからこそ私は現実世界で自分たち自身と向き合い続けるというBABYMETALらしいことができていたのかもしれない。だから、今作を聴くにあたって、まずはひとつ好きな曲を見つけてもらって、その曲と向き合うところから始めてみたらいいんじゃないかと思います。私みたいに全ての曲と向き合おうとするときっと混乱しちゃうと思う(笑)。
SU-METAL: As a whole, I’d agree. Maybe it’ll give you a headache if you keep facing such issues all the time (laughs). There are a lot of questions asked of you, for which you have to find the answers for yourself. THE OTHER ONE is a new world of BABYMETAL, but at the same time, it’s also about facing ourselves in a strange parallel world. In this album, I’m able to continuously face my other self that lives in the BABYMETAL of a parallel world. As is often the case for BABYMETAL, this may also be the reason why I can keep facing myself in this world as well. So, when listening to this album, I think it would be a good idea to start by finding a song you like in particular, and facing it head-on. If you try to match yourself with all the songs like I did, I’m sure you’ll just confuse yourself (laughs).
5. Time Wave

時間という概念、それは終わりのないメビウスの輪のよう。過去も未来も現在も、時の波に乗ってどこへでも行ける。時を超えた先にあるMETALVERSEとは、迷いこんでしまった迷路なのか、それとも辿り着くべき目的地 (Destination) なのか。
The concept of time is like an endless Mobius strip. The past, the future, and the present can exist anywhere on the wave of time. Is the METALVERSE that lies beyond time a maze in which we have wandered into, or is it a destination we must reach?
SU-METAL この曲も好きなんだよね。
SU-METAL: I love this song too.
MOAMETAL 好き好き。サウンドがちょっとテクノっぽいというか、近未来感があるじゃん。
MOAMETAL: I love it love it! It’s got a bit of a techno-like or futuristic sound, right?
SU-METAL そうだね。今を生きてるんだけど、過去も未来も生きていて、さらにそこを自由に行き来しているような歌詞。今回のアルバムは英語詞と日本語詞で別人格を描いていると勝手に思っているんですけど、「Time Wave」もそんな感じだと思っていて。過去からきた誰かなのか、未来の予言者なのかはわからないんですけど、別人格の人が何かを投げかけているような歌詞が好きだし、Aメロの始まり方もすごく好きなんですよね。
SU-METAL: For sure. The lyrics are not just about living in the present, but also the past and future, moving freely back and forth between them. I think the English and Japanese lyrics on this album depict different personalities, and you can experience that in “Time Wave” as well. It’s unclear if it’s someone from the past or a prophet of the future, but I like lyrics where it’s like a different persona is throwing something at you, and I really like the way the verse starts.
MOAMETAL 「Time Wave」は聴きやすいと思います。テクノ要素が強い曲は最近流行ってるし、私も好きです。ノリやすい曲だと思う。
MOAMETAL: "Time Wave” is easy listening. Songs with strong techno elements are pretty popular nowadays, and like this style a lot. It’s quite easy to groove to.
SU-METAL あと、ダンスが絶対カッコいいと思うから振りがつくのが楽しみ。お客さんにも絶対楽しんでもらえる曲になると思います。
SU-METAL: Also its dance moves will definitely be super cool, so I’m looking forward to seeing what the choreography will look like once completed. I’m sure the fans will enjoy it a lot as well.
6. Believing
Lyrics: PERI-METAL

季節が変わっても、時が流れても、変わらないものと変わりゆくもの。鏡に反射する光が照らし出す、2つの顔、2つの相対する世界。誰かの言葉、己の言葉、信じるのは?
Even if the seasons change and time passes, some things remain the same and some change. When light reflects in the mirror, what appears are two faces and two relative worlds. Who should we believe: someone else’s words or your own?
SU-METAL 日本で発売されたアルバムの収録曲で全て英語詞なのはこの曲が初めてなんですよ。さっき、英語が別人格を表現しているって言いましたけど、この曲もメッセージ的にはそうで、自分が見ているものと他人が見ているものは同じではないかもしれないっていう、他人からの視点がある曲なんです。それを英語で表現しているのもすごく面白いし、〈THE OTHER ONE〉っていうBABYMETALのもうひとつの世界というコンセプトにもすごく合っていると思います。実は、この曲は5年前くらいに作られた曲なんですけど、そのときにレコーディングした音源がこの曲には入っているんですよ。よく聴くとちょっと幼い声が入っていて、当時の自分と今の自分がコラボレーションしているんです。
SU-METAL: This is the first song on an album released in Japan that has lyrics entirely in English. I mentioned earlier that English lyrics express a different personality, and it’s the same for this song’s message. It’s from someone else’s point of view, and is about the fact that you don’t see the same thing that others see. I think expressing this in English is quite interesting, and fits well with the concept of THE OTHER ONE, which is another world of BABYMETAL. This song was actually both written and recorded about 5 years ago. If you listen to it carefully, you can still hear a more childish voice, and it’s a collaboration between our past and present selves.

MOAMETAL 「Believing」だけど「Time Wave」じゃん。
MOAMETAL: Although we’re talking about “Believing”, this theme of past and present is essentially what “Time Wave” describes.
SU-METAL そうだね(笑)。BABYMETALって曲を制作するのにめちゃくちゃ時間をかけるアーティストなんですけど、だからこそこういうことができるんですよね。ほかにこういうことをしてる人はいないんじゃないかな。
SU-METAL: That’s right (laughs). BABYMETAL takes a crazy amount of time to produce our songs, and that’s why this sort of thing tends to happen. I don’t think there’s anyone else out there that does what we do.
7. METALIZM

立ち込める煙霧の中登場するメタリアンの騎士。まるで寓話のような物語の中、トライバルなリズムと妖艶なフレーズが特徴的な楽曲。
An armored knight appears amid a smoky haze. The song features tribal rhythms interwoven with captivating melodies as if it narrates a fable-like story.
SU-METAL これも私が好きな曲ですね。
SU-METAL: I love this song too.
MOAMETAL 私も好き好き、「METALIZM」!
MOAMETAL: “METALIZM!” I love this song so much.
SU-METAL この曲は一番カオスというかよくわからない曲で、このアルバムの「なんじゃこりゃ!? 」枠なんです。どうやって説明したらいいかわからないけど、早く聴いてほしいですね。ライブで化けそう。
SU-METAL: This is the most chaotic song, and it’s rather difficult to understand, playing the role of “what the heck is this?!” on this album. Though I really have no idea how to describe it, I can’t wait for people to listen to it. It will definitely blow people away when performed live.
MOAMETAL 曲自体もいいんですけど、ライブで振りや生演奏が入ることで変わってくる曲なんじゃないかと思っているので、どうなるのか楽しみですね。この曲でお客さんはどうやって盛り上がるんだろうね？
MOAMETAL: The song itself is good, but I think it’ll change significantly when performed with choreography and live music, so look forward to seeing how it turns out. I wonder how hyped the audience will get at this song?
SU-METAL ねえ？これまでこういうタイプの曲はなかったからどうなるんだろう？って。
SU-METAL: Right? We’ve never had a song like this before, so I wonder how it will turn out.
―中近東的な雰囲気のある曲ですよね。
It’s got a Middle Eastern feel to it.
SU-METAL そうなんですよね。BABYMETALの新しい引き出しだと思います。
SU-METAL: That’s right. It’s another new and unique element we’ve added to BABYMETAL’s repertoire of skills.
8. Monochrome

Music & Arrangement: YUPPEMETAL
concept: MONOCHROME
夜空に打ち上げられたモノクロームの花火は、子供たちの目には何色に映っていたのだろうか？北欧神話で「終末の日」を意味するラグナロクに、儚い希望のようにまたたく星空が虹色に包まれる日が来るのを願って。
What color did the monochrome fireworks shot into the night sky appear to the children's eyes? With a wish for the days when the starry sky flickering like a fragile hope will be covered in rainbow colors to come to Ragnarok which means "doomsday" in Norse mythology.
MOAMETAL これはめちゃめちゃギターが活きてる曲だと思います。ギターのリフに合わせて踊っていたりするし、バンド好きの人にも刺さる曲だと思います。あと、私はYUPPEMETALさんの曲が好きということもあって、この曲にハマっています。初めて聴いたときから好きだったんですけど、振りがついてもやっぱり好きで。キャッチーなメロディがYUPPEMETALさんらしいし、YUPPEMETALさんのおかげでかなりBABYMETALらしくなってると思います。
MOAMETAL: This song really brings out the guitar well. The riffs are great to dance to, and this’ll be quite addictive for those who like bands, I think. Something that gets me into this song is the fact that I’m a fan of YUPPEMETAL. I liked the song the first time I listened to it, and appreciated it in a new way after the choreography was added. The catchiness is very much YUPPEMETAL’s style, and it’s thanks to him that this song has a really BABYMETAL-style.
―YUPPEMETALさんの曲はどんなところが魅力なんですか。
What is it about YUPPEMETAL’s music that appeals to you?
MOAMETAL もともとボカロ曲をよく聴いていたこともあって、YUPPEMETALさんの曲を聴くようになったんですけど、どの曲にもダークさがあるというか。たぶん、ご本人がメタル好きなのかな？あとは、YUPPEMETALさんの曲は変態的なリズムが特徴で、私たちも普段からかなり苦しめられているんですけど(笑)、それと同時にいつも挑戦を与えてくれているので一緒に成長できている気がしてます。
MOAMETAL: I originally started listening to YUPPEMETAL’s music because I used to listen to Vocaloid songs a lot, and each song has a dark side to it. I imagine it’s because he’s not just a professional, but also a genuine fan of metal? In addition, his songs are characterized by their ridiculous time signatures, and that tortures us every time (laughs). But at the same time, it’s thanks to the challenges his songs give us, that enable us to grow up together with the song itself.
(NOTE: In this context, the word “band” in Japanese typically refers to songs that have strong instrumentals. As such, although it might be strange for someone to say in English, “I like bands”, in Japanese this generally means that they particularly enjoy noticeable instruments in the music)
9. Light and Darkness

光があるから闇があり、闇があることによって輝く世界がある。光と闇が交差する夜、毒され堕ちてゆく先に求めるのは、強い愛に満ちあふれた世界。開いた扉の先に待ち受けるのは希望なのか絶望なのか?
It's light that brings darkness, while there's a world that shines because of darkness. At night when light and darkness cross, what are you longing for after you get corrupted and fall down is the world overflowing with strong affection. Is it hope or despair that is waiting for you when the door opens in front?
SU-METAL この曲もけっこう聴きやすい曲だと思います。BABYMETALの歌詞にはこれまであまり登場してこなかったワードが多くて。
SU-METAL: This song is quite pleasant to listen to. There are many words we’ve never used in BABYMETAL’s lyrics before.
MOAMETAL たしかに。〈毒されてく〉とか〈堕ちる〉とかね。
MOAMETAL: Yeah. Words like “corruption” and “ruin”.
SU-METAL そうそうそう。BABYMETALにはカワイイとメタルっていうニ面性がありますけど、この曲でも光と影が描かれていて、そういう意味ではBABYMETAL要素がしっかりあると思うし、歌っていても光側にいるのかダ ーク側にいるのかで自分の視点が変わるんですよね。つかめるものなのかつかめないものなのかによっても思いが変わってくるし。好きな曲ではあるんですけど、レコーディングでは一番苦戦した曲ですね。
SU-METAL: Yes yes! BABYMETAL has two sides - “kawaii” and “metal”. This song depicts light and shadow, and in that sense, there are key elements of BABYMETAL in it. When I sing it, my perspective changes depending on if I’m on the light side or dark side. My feelings about it change depending on if I can grasp it. I like this song a lot, but it was the most difficult one to record in the studio.
―それはどのへんで?
In what way?
SU-METAL 基本的に休む場所がなくて、ずっと続くんですよ。サビは高音のメロディが続くし、歌詞も強い。でも、高音だからキツいわけじゃなくて、強い歌詞がずっと続くからどこでゆるめたらいいかわからないんです。何かを求めて溺れていく感じを表現しようとすると、どんどん歌に力を込めてしまうんです。何かを求め続けて必死な姿を描くというのはすごく大変で、気が抜けないんですよね。
SU-METAL: Basically, it goes on and on with no place to rest. The chorus has a high-pitched melody and strong lyrics. But it’s not that high notes are tough, but rather that the strong lyrics continue on for so long that it’s hard to tell where to loosen up. When I try to fully immerse myself in the feeling of “yearning for something”, I end up putting more and more power into the song. It takes a lot of effort to portray a desperate person who’s constantly seeking something, and there’s no place to relax.
10. THE LEGEND

コンセプトアルバム『THE OTHER ONE』を締めくくり、LEGENDの旗を掲げたBABYMETALが次のステージに向かっていく。THE OTHER ONEを経て、時空を超えたMETALVERSEの旅に出発する、終わりでもあり始まりでもある楽曲。
Closing this concept album THE OTHER ONE, BABYMETAL proceeds towards the next sage with flags of Legend. This musical piece means both their beginning and end where they start the journey of METALVERSE beyond time and space after going through THE OTHER ONE.
SU-METAL この曲は棺桶がモチーフになっているんですけど、私たちにとって棺桶は終わりであり始まりでもあって、この曲も終わりであり始まりでもあるんです。アルバムでは終わりの曲だし、幕張 (「BABYMETAL RETURNS - THE OTHER ONE -」) でも最後にパフォーマンスしたんですけど、この曲に関しても私は視点に迷っていて。自分が上から物事を俯瞰して人々を集めているのか、自分は人々の中にいてそこから世界を見つめているのか、そこがいつもわからなくなってしまうんです。あと、この曲が未来を歌っているのか、過去を振り返っているのか、今を生きているのか。ある意味ではその全てを歌っているのかもしれない。それもずっとわからないんです。それで、これは始まりの曲でもある。この曲が流れるということはまた始まるんですよ。それが〈THE OTHER ONE〉のシンボルでもあるインフィニティにつながっています。だから、繰り返しになりますけど、これは終わりの曲に聴こえながら始まりの曲でもあるので、この間の幕張で見せた「何かが始まりそうだぞ」という演出にすごく合ってると思っています。この曲も私は未だにつかめないです。
SU-METAL: This song is based on the motif of “Coffin”. For us, a coffin is both an end and a beginning, and so it goes for this song as well. It’s the last song of the album, and it was also the final song of the setlist at Makuhari, but I’ve lost a bit of perspective regarding this song. I always get confused about whether I’m looking down on things from above and gathering people together, or whether I’m among the people and looking at the world from there. Also, I’m not sure if this song is about the future, returning to the past, or living in the present? In a sense, it might be about all of these things. I haven’t figured it out for myself yet either. So it’s a song of beginnings. The fact that it was played means that it begins once more. That leads to infinity, which is also the symbol of THE OTHER ONE. So to reiterate, this song sounds like the end, but it’s also the beginning. It fits the “something is about to start” feeling we created at Makuhari the other night. I still don’t fully understand the song yet.

SU-METAL そのときそのときの正解があるんじゃないかな。だから、自分の言ってることが矛盾するときも来るかもしれないけど、それはそのときの自分としては正解なんだろうからそれでいいんじゃないかなって。そう思わせてくれる曲なんですよね。
SU-METAL: A right answer exists for each moment, I think. So there may come a time when I contradict myself, but that was truly the correct answer for me at the time, and I think that’s fine. That’s what this song makes me think.
