KOBAMETAL, Producer of BABYMETAL

This is a special issue of Hedoban magazine focused on mixed-metal music, and it is no exaggeration to say that BABYMETAL are one of the best in the world at this; arguably one of the most representative artists in this regard. We’d like to take this opportunity to ask KOBAMETAL to enlighten us about BABYMETAL, from a “mixture” point of view. Before BABYMETAL, you often listened to metal, hip-hop, and dance music, correct?

KOBAMETAL: That’s right. The very first CDs I bought were that of Michael Jackson and Seikima-II. Of course, I wasn’t particularly aware of what genre they belonged to at the time… I just naturally liked it. Ever since then, I didn’t hesitate to pick something up if it piqued my interest.

*NOTE: Koba and Demon Kakka of Seikima-II have a great discussion in the 10-year anniversary Kadokawa mook, translated by Capable-Paramedic

It’s not that people who like metal music necessarily dislike dance music, but it tends not to be their cup of tea.

KOBAMETAL: Well, I’m sure that’s true. I’m very well aware of that.

But as someone who listened to both Michael Jackson and Seikima-II at the same time as a child, it seems that KOBAMETAL has never had a problem with enjoying different genres of music such as dance music, even as you were engrossed in metal.

KOBAMETAL:  I also followed *Tetsuya Komuro during his heyday during the 90s. But for metalheads, I think dance music is something that’s just particularly hard to accept. I think that in a sense, they think of metal as “righteousness” - it’s sort of like religion, and anything that deviates from it is heretical… and they might be embarrassed to say that they listen to a different kind of music. So for metalheads, genres such as dance music serve as a type of loyalty or litmus test.

*NOTE: Tetsuya Komuro is recognized as one of the most successful producers in Japanese music history, credited with introducing contemporary electronic dance music to the Japanese mainstream. His influence relating to DA DA DANCE is explored in this article.

Did you tell your metalhead friends that “I’ve been listening to Michael Jackson and TK recently”?

KOBAMETAL: I did tell them. Fortunately, or unfortunately, I had some friends who were working as DJs at the time, so I found myself in an environment where I wasn’t only surrounded by so-called metalheads. I got along with hardcore metalheads just fine, but also had friends who were DJs that were seen as flippant by the metalheads. I also had a few older friends that had formed a TM NETWORK cover band. I wasn’t particularly picky about who I made friends with… I guess you’re more flexible when you’re younger, and I was still a teenager at the time. As one’s career progresses and you reach your 30s, 40s, and 50s, you become more protective of your legacy and what you’ve built up in the past. Of course, that can be a good thing, but there is the danger of shutting out everything else if you age poorly and become close-minded. “I will never appreciate something that I think is unworthy!”, or “The only things that are valuable are the things I already believed to be true!”

*NOTE: Tak Matsumoto, whose guitar play features in “DA DA DANCE”, toured in support of TM NETWORK between 1985 and 1999, founding B’z together with Hiroshi Inaba

It’s true that our thoughts and sensibilities can grow more entrenched and stubborn as we get older.

KOBAMETAL: I’d say so, yes. So personally, I think it was a good thing that I was able to enjoy both metal and dance music at the same time, while I was still young and flexible.

How about hip-hop?

KOBAMETAL: I wasn’t particularly familiar with any hip-hop artist in particular, but it was still a genre I paid attention to and listened to. I’d note that it seems the quality of Japanese hip-hop and rap artists is quite high nowadays. Perhaps it’s a reflection of the times, but compared to 20 or 30 years ago, I think there are many more bilingual or multilingual people now. There are many Japanese that were born and raised in the U.S. that have now come to Japan - these people have become very skilled at rapping, including usage of language, English pronunciation, and lyrical slang. In addition, they mix some unique Japanese cultural elements into their music. It’s a lot of fun to listen to.

Ah, you’ve continued to listen to contemporary Japanese hip-hop.

KOBAMETAL: I don’t listen to hip-hop that closely, but I do pay special attention to hip-hop made by young people in particular. When I think of hip-hop from my generation, I think of Anthrax and Public Enemy’s “Bring The Noise” from the early 90s, and the soundtrack to “Judgment Night” (1993), with Slayer and Ice-T.

Bring The Noise by Anthrax and Public Enemy

“Bring The Noise” and “Judgment Night” were considered the start of a new era that would see the mixing of metal with other genres.

KOBAMETAL: I’d say so. Also, I think I was strongly influenced by the culture of mixing metal and other genres - including S.O.D., which is seen as the crossover between metal and hardcore.

Indeed, I feel that culture may have been where BABYMETAL was born.

KOBAMETAL: I liked  mainstream metal, but I also liked S.O.D., Anthrax, Public Enemy, and songs like “Judgment Night”. It was like, “Oh, so this kind of thing is possible!” “Bring The Noise” in particular was really cool, and I had the impression that metal was really deep and broad, and that anything was possible.

「Bring The Noise」以降から、RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE と KOЯN、そして LIMP BIZKIT が出てくるわけじゃないですか。

That expanded the possibilities of metal music dramatically, didn’t it? If “Bring The Noise” was the turning point for metalheads, those who accepted it expanded their horizons, and those who didn’t like it moved further into the purist side… that’s how I’d describe that era. After “Bring The Noise”, then came Rage Against The Machine (RATM), KoЯn, and Limp Bizkit. Did you follow that generation of bands as well?

RAGE (AGAINST THE MACHINE)、KOЯN、LIMP BIZKIT、あとはそれこそレッチリ(RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS)や FISHBONE もそうですよね。

KOBAMETAL: Those were indeed bands that suited my taste very much. RATM, KoЯn, Limp Bizkit, and of course, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fishbone - these bands were often played on MTV at the time. After that, 311 and others followed. In Japan, a lot of hip-hop mixed bands such as BACK DROP BOMB came out, and I think the loud rock sound we know today was born then.

―― BACK DROP BOMB や COKEHEAD HIPSTERS とか、初期の AIR JAM 界隈的な。

BACK DROP BOMB and the COKEHEAD HIPSTERS from the early AIR JAM festival era.

KOBAMETAL: Yes, I think so. That was probably between the late 90s to around 2000. If we’re talking about the post “Bring The Noise” era, we also shouldn’t overlook grunge as a genre. I don’t know which came first. Although grunge isn’t a mixture, it is a subgenre of metal, so it also works as a loyalty test that can divide metal fans.

You could definitely see it as a loyalty test towards metal (laughs). The rise of grunge came in 1991, and “Bring The Noise” by Anthrax and Public Enemy also came out in 1991, so I guess that lines up.

KOBAMETAL: Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Blind Melon… there were various bands back then. I personally liked Stone Temple Pilots a lot.

Both mixture and grunge brought new novelty and interest quite suddenly.

KOBAMETAL: They did, yes. I think the people who built the mixed metal and rap metal scenes were influenced by legendary bands but also had an interest in other genres, and so something new was born from the hybridization of these influences.

When I first met KOBAMETAL around the spring of 2013, you said at that point that you had a world map of metal, and you wanted BABYMETAL to explore many countries and genres. Was combining hip-hop with BABYMETAL at the top of the list?

KOBAMETAL: It was, because the grooving feel of rap-metal was just so unique and cool. I personally loved it, of course, and as mentioned earlier, I was heavily influenced by RATM, KoЯn, Limp Bizkit, and others, so it was a pretty expected consequence.

BABYMETAL "Iine!" Music Video

I think “Iine!” is the first BABYMETAL song to incorporate a rap section.

KOBAMETAL: “Iine!” does have one section, but the first half of “Doki Doki ☆ Morning” also has a part, around the verse where the words are sung quite quickly, and it sounds somewhat like a mixture.

Oh, that’s right!

KOBAMETAL: So “Doki Doki ☆ Morning” may have been the first to feature an easily understandable rap section

What was your intention and interpretation of “Doki Doki ☆ Morning”? How did you create a song that mixed so many genres?

KOBAMETAL: BABYMETAL’s music is often created by mashing styles together. So we’d do things like combine the melody from Song A with the chorus from Song C, before further combining the various parts of the song together, and something like “Doki Doki ☆ Morning” would be the end result. At the time - and this probably applies to Western music as well - some Japanese artists were creating songs with melodies that developed rapidly and with intensity, using sounds that felt cluttered and clanking; these so-called “denpa song” types were trendy, among both bands and pop music.

Example of “Denpa song”:

It was the same for “idol songs”.

KOBAMETAL: Yes, indeed. Since those kinds of songs were trending, I had that in mind when building this song, utilizing many scene transitions and very fast tempo with intense build up.

And in the midst of it, you pasted in a rap part.

KOBAMETAL: We did. We also talked about including so-called self-deprecating material that dissed metal music. For example, in the MV for “Ijime, Dame, Zettai”, there’s a scene where a metalhead is being bullied by hip-hopers, where he gets his long hair cut off and is crying, and while it’s more of a minor homage to that kind of bullying that might draw a knowing half chuckle, it had a half-hidden yet strong message. So that’s kind of what the rap part in “Iine!” was going for - intentionally doing something a bit silly. We were hoping to create something where listeners would wonder where we were going and find it interesting, without overthinking the impact of the song. At the same time, the idea was to have something more for people that listened closely to understand. I think there’s a bit of an inside joke in there that people in the know will get.

The next song to feature a rap section after “Iine!” was “Onedari Daisakusen”.

KOBAMETAL: Indeed. “Onedari Daisakusen” takes more of a straightforward, easy-to-understand rap-metal approach

Did you have the clear intention of creating a Limp Bizkit-style rap metal song?

KOBAMETAL: That was the idea, yes. However, we had several teams of songwriters, and it was born from somewhat of a music competition. They had a very clear idea of what they wanted to do, so we decided to go with that approach, and make the arrangement and lyrics a little more interesting.

Onedari Daisakusen by Black BABYMETAL

How long has the newest rap metal mixture song - “BxMxC” been around, if you don’t mind sharing?

KOBAMETAL 「BxMxC」

KOBAMETAL: “BxMxC” really was a last minute project, barely completed just in time.

Did KOBAMETAL personally want a song with a so-called current Japanese hip-hop feel?

KOBAMETAL: I did, yes. Actually, there’s another song we wrote around the same time as “BxMxC”. However, it wasn’t ripe for harvest yet… it needed to mature for a bit longer; or rather, we’re still laying the groundwork. Ultimately, we decided it would be better to release “BxMxC” first.

Was KOBAMETAL listening to a lot of Japanese hip-hop when you first started creating “BxMxC”?

KOBAMETAL: I was listening to BAD HOP and Miyachi at the time, and a bit of K-Pop as well.

It seems both Electronic Music and Hip-hop are important for BABYMETAL? Would you say that you drew inspiration from TK’s sound and when utilizing an electro and techno approach?

KOBAMETAL: That was part of it, but I also listened to stuff like Skrillex, or video game music. Earlier on, I would also listen to 2ManyDJs and Soulwax. And before that, I also used to listen to Portishead and Massive Attack.

Ah, Trip-hop style.

KOBAMETAL: Yes. I enjoyed listening to all those kinds of music. Even if I don’t know a lot about them, I do use them to build a drawer full of inspiration from things I listened to before that I pull out and use at times.

Returning to an earlier topic, the debut song “Doki Doki ☆ Morning” mixed dance and metal music, yes?

KOBAMETAL: That was the idea, yes. When we first received the demo track of the song - which was the result of a competition from the creators, it was much more poppy, with an easy-to-understand J-pop feeling. I thought it would be too ordinary if we didn’t change it, so we kept on tweaking it until it ultimately sounded completely different.

Based on your mention of Skrillex earlier, when the dubstep music genre emerged with him at the forefront, I imagine it must have given you the same sense of shock and impact?

BABYMETAL with Skrillex
BABYMETAL with Skrillex after a surprise "Gimme Choco!!" Remix Collaboration

KOBAMETAL: Definitely. I think Skrillex is very metal. It’s more like metalcore, I suppose - the rhythm really rocks. I had a strong impression of it feeling like the breakdowns in metalcore. I wondered who this person was, looked him up, and found out he used to be in a band, and was like, “I knew it!” There are some artists in the electro and hip-hop genres that have their roots in metal and rock music. When I listen to their sound, I can tell. The way they use rhythm, like the wobbling bass, and the way they drop the sound, it’s just like the breakdowns that metalcore bands use. That’s how I think of it, at least.

Among dubstep artists, Skrillex in particular does have somewhat of a rock and metal feel.

KOBAMETAL: I think his groove is totally rock-style. That’s why I really listened to the album The Path of Totality (2011) that KoЯn made in collaboration with Skrillex and other artists.

That album is said to be the one shunned by pure KoЯn fans.

KOBAMETAL: I suppose that's the case (laughs). The so-called “band-feeling”... I think those that preferred KoЯn’s original sound might have been dissatisfied, but I really liked it, though it was definitely experimental. I don’t know how to put it… it felt like KoЯn had established somewhat of a pattern up to that point, right? A pattern that continued since their debut album KoЯn (1994).

They had a unique groove, didn’t they?

KOBAMETAL: They definitely did! Even though there was somewhat of a style there, it had been a long time since they’d given me a “What the heck is this?” feeling. It kind of felt like they were proving they could still do something new, and it really helped me enjoy the album.

BABYMETAL with KoRn
BABYMETAL after performing with Brian "Head" Welch

Like the KoRn album mentioned earlier, metal and rock artists often collaborate with artists from other genres. The same goes for hip-hip and electro artists. For example, they ask to do remixes. Does KOBAMETAL enjoy such collaborations?

KOBAMETAL: It’s not that I have a problem with collaborations per se. I think they can be very interesting, including the collaboration between Anthrax and Public Enemy mentioned earlier. However, I also think that chemistry and each party’s main goal and target is very important. There are so-called commercial collaborations where you just lend out your name… for the sake of creating a buzz, basically. I’m not so fond of that kind of thing. I don’t think it’s very interesting if it feels like you did it half heartedly or in a frivolous way. So if we’re going to do a collab, we should be able to see the story behind it, or why it’s necessary for these people to work together here… if done that way, it makes a lot of sense to me.

I understand completely.

KOBAMETAL: Just collaborating with someone because they’re famous… like, for example, if we collaborated with BTS. What would we want to express? Are we looking for the BTS sound or dance? I feel like it would only work if a song absolutely needed BTS specifically. When BABYMETAL asked Tak Matsumoto-san to participate in “DA DA DANCE”, I thought the song was a metal interpretation of TK’s sound at the time. He is a very big artist, of course, but we really believed he was the best person for the song. We only ever had Tak Matsumoto-san in mind when writing the guitar part, as he was one of the most prominent guitarists in that era of music.

―― Tak Matsumoto

In a sense, Tak Matsumoto-san is the guitarist that bridged the gap between dance music and hard rock music.

KOBAMETAL: That’s right. I think there were several guitarists who did technical studio work at the time, such as Kenji Kitajima of “Fence of Defense”, and other big artists from “Being”. Tak Matsumoto-san was definitely representative of that generation. I don’t think you could say that any famous guitarist would suffice.

NOTE: The entertainment company “Being” produced many popular J-Rock/J-Pop artists in the early 90s, including B’z. Their most well-known songs internationally may be from the Detective Conan anime series, of which B’z - Tak Matsumoto’s duo group - performed many of the songs.

"Girigiri" chop performed by B'z, used as the 6th OP of the Detective Conan anime, with guitars with Tak Matsumoto

In other words, without a special reason to choose him, this collaboration could have ended up half hearted and frivolous.

KOBAMETAL: Definitely. Musicians and artists have their own creativity and thing going on. Therefore, it’s not right to ask them to participate as guests while ignoring their creativity. So, regardless of whether someone’s famous or not, you need to have a clear vision for why this sound from another band is used in this part of your song. I don’t think we’d enjoy a collaboration unless this kind of story or inevitability can be seen in context.

Related to what KOBAMETAL just said, I think metal bands can be hesitant to incorporate different genres. They might be interested, but don’t know how far they should go, or can’t take the plunge. But for KOBAMETAL, there was never such a barrier - if it’s interesting, you just go for it and make them your own, I guess. I think there are many people that would like to know how to do that. How does BABYMETAL manage to incorporate so many genres? I’d like to ask you more about BABYMETAL’s technique for mixing and mingling.

KOBAMETAL: Ah, well, I’m not so sure. I guess part of it is personality. Of course, I’m the type of person that’s pretty particular, with a very strong sense of “OK/NG” in my head. As said before, as long as it makes sense to me, I can say, “Sure, why not?” without overthinking it too much. So I try not to filter out things too easily. However, when it comes to BABYMETAL, its origins really were quite unique. If it were a normal rock band or metal band, the band’s color and members’ songs would be the main factors. For example, it would be quite a hurdle for a legendary band like Metallica or Iron Maiden to suddenly perform a different genre.

Part of it might be that fans might dislike it.

KOBAMETAL: That’s part of it, I imagine. Also, there tend to be just one or two creators serving as songwriters, right? But in the case of BABYMETAL, there’s no set band format. We have a “project system” where the whole team - including songwriters or instrumentalists change for each song, so we don’t have to feel possessive about keeping a specific style. In that sense, I think we are more flexible than other artists.

This freedom that you enjoyed from the very start made a big difference, didn’t it?

KOBAMETAL: For sure. In a typical band, the guitarist, bassist, drummer, and vocalist are all fixed, and the same person plays the same song every time. Of course, there are advantages to doing things that way , but in the case of BABYMETAL, the creators and instrumentalists can change with every song - the members are the only ones that remain constant. That’s what makes it so special, and it’s a big part of why we’ve been able to incorporate genres other than metal music.

NOTE: As a reminder, because the only official members of BABYMETAL are SU-METAL and MOAMETAL (and previously YUIMETAL), whenever the term “members” is used, it’s referring to them specifically, and not others like the Kami Band or staff. In interviews from when they were younger, we tended to translate this as “the girls”. However, as this word has become less appropriate with them becoming adults, we will be using the word “members” more consistently moving forward, unless it’s referring to a time in the past when the members were more child-like.

I see. On the other hand, are there also times when you decide not to touch certain genres because they don’t suit BABYMETAL?

KOBAMETAL: It’s more of a song-by-song basis rather than a genre, if we’re talking about something that doesn’t work. There are some songs that we tried to work with for a while, and just couldn’t make it happen. Also, as was the case for “BxMxC”, timing plays a huge role. Sometimes we may feel that it’s just not the best time to release a song out into the world. So there are quite a few songs that are left to age and mature, ready to come out 3, 4, maybe 5 years later. It’s like wine (laughs).

(interviewer laughs)

KOBAMETAL: Lightly aged before release into the world? That would be one way to describe it (laughs). It’s not exactly like playing cards or a game of sorts, but it’s like, “when should I activate this one”. That’s definitely a big factor. Of course, there are times when we take the story of BABYMETAL into account, considering where we’re at, and if releasing the song at this moment fits what we’re going for. We also have to take into account contemporary musical trends, among other things. There are songs that we think should be put on hold a while longer, and songs that we want to perform right away. It’s really on a song-to-song basis.

I see, so you have an even larger stock of BABYMETAL songs than we might have expected, though many of them are still in the maturation process (laughs).

KOBAMETAL: Yes (laughs). Some that haven’t become songs yet… still half-completed work-in-progress. There are times when a song is in season, and you have to enjoy it while it’s perfectly ripe. As mentioned earlier, there’s both BABYMETAL’s own sense of timing, as well as that of the world.

Speaking of timing, I feel that “DA DA DANCE” was released at the exact right timing.

*NOTE: “DA DA DANCE” is Editor-in-chief Umezawa’s favorite song from Metal Galaxy

BABYMETAL performing DA DA DANCE

KOBAMETAL 「DA DA DANCE (feat.

KOBAMETAL: Yes, I feel that way about “DA DA DANCE” as well. The Metal Galaxy (2019) album itself was created to further expand upon elements we’d incorporated into both BABYMETAL (2014) and Metal Resistance (2016).

Similarly to Skrillex, I think Bring Me The Horizon (BMTH) is an important group both for BABYMETAL and KOBAMETAL. How did you see the change in BMTH? They started out in deathcore, then began playing electro and trap, further moving into pop, to the point where they even had dancers on stage.

KOBAMETAL: Well, my impression is that they’re truly great metal people at their core. That has never changed. With Amo (2019), they broke away from a typical band sound and introduced electro and hip-hop into their repertoire, and I think they were said to be “pandering to pop music”. However, my feeling was that while the sound itself had changed, the roots were the same. The core was still there, and it ran deep. So to me, it wasn’t really a change. Also, around the time BMTH moved away from the heavy band sound, we saw a larger trend of bands that used to play mostly heavy music shifting into electro and pop, as the whole scene changed drastically.

That’s true. Bands started using electro, for example.

KOBAMETAL: I’m not going to call anyone out, of course (laughs), but for some other artists releasing albums during that time, they seemed to boldly add pop or electro music into their sound, but I felt it was lacking in substance.

Ah, the half-heartedness.

KOBAMETAL: It might be strange to say “go with the flow”, but trends are what they are, and I don’t think it’s necessarily good or bad, unless it doesn’t convey what you’re really trying to express. However, BMTH’s Amo has a very clear message, and the sound uses synths frequently, replacing live instruments like guitars and drums with digital electronic devices. Nevertheless, the very core of it still left a strong impression on me, which has never changed even now. Some songs go entirely into hip-hop, some are completely electro, and quite a few songs have no guitars or drums. But even so, to me, it feels very metal.

The part you just mentioned, about it feeling very metal… I think the core essence is something KOBAMETAL can relate to and evaluate, based on things you find important.

KOBAMETAL: I suppose so. I don’t think it’s a matter of words or visuals, but sensory feeling. As it is for Skrillex mentioned before, there are some artists whose work conveys a sense of who they are at their core, and others whose work just doesn’t do so. That’s just my personal opinion of things, though.

Ah well, the feeling of something being half-hearted is just something you grasp immediately upon hearing it, isn’t it?

KOBAMETAL: Yes (laughs). Of course, BABYMETAL isn’t exactly mainstream metal either, and from the perspective of a hardcore metalhead, they may see us as manufactured. However, I’m the type of person who wants to keep a consistent core value. That’s something we keep in mind consciously when making music.

That’s the principle BABYMETAL keeps in mind as it mixes various genres to create diverse music.

KOBAMETAL: I think so, yes. Nowadays, if you’re technically proficient, you can just prepare ingredients and mix them together quickly and easily. Technology has evolved very much! But there’s something more to it… I think it can be very hard to reach that point.

And as KOBAMETAL mentioned at the beginning, metal in particular is a special genre with many fans and artists that search for truth in a religious manner, so if you make a mistake in making bold changes or mixing and matching, you’ll find yourself harshly criticized.

KOBAMETAL: It really does feel somewhat religious, or even Biblical. I wonder if weekly confessionals during the weekend are part of the process of confirming what you believe is correct? I’d say it does apply to metal music as well. When you go to a metal band’s show, they play the usual songs, you finish the usual call and response, and think to yourself, “We are correct in our metal beliefs! I’m glad I believe what I believe!” I think it’s a culture that shares this kind of feeling and illusion; it’s quite wonderful. However, if something goes a little out of line or beyond the understanding of its believers, it probably becomes especially confusing. That’s why we’re trying to broaden the scope of the BABYMETAL project… that’s the role we play. The goal is to expand the range of metal music - a proposal to enjoy various worlds, and various kinds of metal music.

I think a great thing about BABYMETAL is that while presenting a style of music that expands the possibilities of metal, it has still been able to draw in and keep metalheads throughout the past 10 years. Has KOBAMETAL also observed this as well?

KOBAMETAL: We’ve been blessed with several opportunities to work with legendary artists like the “metal god” Rob Halford-san, and people like him that have lived metal for decades have said to us to never forget our core… I think that demonstrates respect for metal. Even as we expand the range of metal, we must retain our loyalty to its core essence. If you mess with metal music too much and just chase trends, you’ll be quickly unveiled as frivolous. I used to be a hardcore metalhead, so I understand where they’re coming from. However, what is acceptable still varies from person to person. I’d say that I’m at the absolute bottom of the metal pyramid.

You’re too humble (laughs).

KOBAMETAL: No, I really believe so. From the viewpoint of metal elitists, like those that might look down on anything that’s not Manowar, they must see me as too omnivorous and unprincipled. There aren’t that many people that listen to both stylistic music like Yngwie Malmsteen and Limp Bizkit (laughs).

It’s true that people who like both Yngwie Malmsteen and Limp Bizkit are a minority (laughs). But I think KOBAMETAL’s peculiar metal sensibilities are quite valuable. It’s why we can enjoy an artist for which both the melodic speed metal “Road of Resistance” and the rap-metal  “Onedari Daisakusen” can coexist.

KOBAMETAL: It’s a matter of preference of course, but personally, I think both are good. I liked Yngwie enough to go see him multiple times. I listen to Shrapnel-style guitarists who play ridiculously fast as well, but I also find gaudy artists like Limp Bizkit quite interesting in their own way.

It must be quite a challenge to unite Yngwei and Shrapnel-style fans with rap metal (laughs). What does KOBAMETAL find to be the point in common?

KOBAMETAL: Ultimately, I appreciate artists who’ve mastered their craft, or have a clear focus. For example, Yngwei has pushed it as far as anyone could. I think he’s an amazing performer because he does things that might appear ridiculous, but does them entirely seriously.

That’s one of the ideal forms of metal.

KOBAMETAL: That’s what resonates with me more - those who’ve mastered their own things, even if it’s niche or weird.

Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit seems to have also mastered the art, in a sense.

KOBAMETAL: Think of that voice of his - it feels like we have no clue where it came from. It even sounds like a joking imitation of something (laughs). He’s definitely mastered it, including the curious nuance of making it hard to tell if he’s singing seriously or not.

That voice of his is indeed unique.

KOBAMETAL: Of course, it’s a distinctly hip-hop thing to lift the ending syllable of a word, but I think Fred and Limp Bizkit do it the best. Their sound just gets everyone into a groove; you just can’t do any better it. I think it was last year that I saw some footage of them performing in the U.S.? Even though Limp Bizkit is getting old, when the song came on, they had this audience a generation or two removed from them jumping up and down. That’s like, totally unbeatable, they’re so good at it.

そして、1st(1997年発表『Three Dollar Bill, Y'all$』)から現在まで、ほぼほぼラップ・メタルのスタイルを貫き通してるじゃないですか。

Limp Bizkit does have quite a few killer hits. And from their first album Three Dollar Bill, Y’all$ (1997) until now, they’ve largely kept their style of rap metal, right? It’s been very consistent.

KOBAMETAL: I would say so, yes. There are artists that change styles from album to album, and those that move forward on a single axis. I envy those that are able to do what they do regardless of how the world changes around them. I think it’s quite healthy. Especially overseas, I think there are some big differences between the Japanese and American or European music scenes. If you describe Japan as a road, it’s basically one big road, with maybe one extra lane at most. Whereas in the U.S. or Europe, there are two, three, maybe even four lanes, and there is always a new variety of music to be found. On this road, you can see hip-hop, rock, metal, all running alongside one another. Each genre finds its roots in culture. Whenever there’s a show, tens of thousands of people come out - it would be unthinkable in Japan.

NOTE: Koba’s statement here may seem odd at first glance, because for example, when Americans do reaction videos to non-American music, they often complain that they never get to hear this kind of diverse or creative music in American music. Japanese music in particular is oftentimes praised for its variety. Our interpretation is that Koba is saying the Japanese mainstream music specifically is simple and fixed. There may be various alternatives and niche groups, but they very rarely affect the mainstream. In comparison, in other countries there can be multiple popular “mainstream” types that operate in parallel, and Japanese music fans appreciate this.

Are there any genres you’ve been listening to that you’d like to tinker with? As much as you’re allowed to reveal, of course.

KOBAMETAL: There are indeed genres we’d tried to take on with limited success so far. Hard Rock, for example.

Hard Rock!? That’s somewhat unexpected (laughs).

KOBAMETAL: Indeed. Also, things with an 80s or 90s feel to them. There are things we’ve tried but couldn’t work out yet. What’s interesting when it comes to mixture and hip-hop? I’d say the Indian metal band Bloodywood is pretty good.

I knew Bloodywood would catch your eye.

KOBAMETAL: They’re quite an interesting band, aren’t they? I was really curious at how they started doing their thing. Also from India is Skyharbor, who toured in the U.S. in support of BABYMETAL, who are quite interesting due to their unique mix of music. We also toured with the Mongolian band The Hu, who are also very interesting. They don’t play guitars, but rather an ethnic instrument that resembles a shamisen, but electronic and pluggable. And it looks like they made it themselves!

The Hu

Is KOBAMETAL interested in having other artists remix BABYMETAL’s music?

KOBAMETAL: When it comes to remixes, I’d be interested in an opportunity if it presents itself. Someday! I don’t know exactly when that would be. I’m also not sure if fans would want a remix, or if they’d be interested in it. It’s not something metal bands normally do, after all.

When it comes to remixes, there are a lot of haphazard ones (laughs).

KOBAMETAL: It’s not exactly a remix, but I really enjoyed The Metallica Blacklist released last year that was a tribute to Metallica’s Black Album. Many artists covered the same song, and we could listen to many different interpretations. Is there a clear split in opinion when it comes to that collection of covers?

I get the impression that detractors outnumber fans on social media. Longtime Metallica fans in particular seem to dislike it (laughs).

KOBAMETAL: I see. I personally like it a lot. This goes back to the first half of my point, but I think it’s possible that Metallica fans are not interested in other artist’s covers or remixes of Metallica’s songs. In the worlds of electro and hip-hop, mixes, remixes, and different versions of songs are common, so it might not be as strange to them; but for hardcore Metallica fans, their negative response was likely inevitable. I think fans might have been thinking, “What’s the point of listening to a Metallica song that James Hetfield didn't sing?” However, I enjoy Metallica covers. For example, when a female vocalist covers one of their songs, the melody and structure of the song that might have been originally obscured by Hetfield’s voice comes to the forefront. It helps me rediscover the wonderful melodies that had gone overlooked before. Those discoveries are something I enjoy about these things. When I heard the jazz-inspired version of “The Unforgiven”, it reminded me of how great the melody was. The tribute album helped me appreciate Metallica’s melodies in general once more, but maybe that’s not what hardcore fans wanted.

On the other hand, if all the artists on The Metallica Blacklist were metal bands, it would have been completely uninteresting, wouldn’t it?

KOBAMETAL: I would imagine so. In that case, I think people would rather just listen to Metallica’s original. For example, it would be less interesting if a great drummer played everything perfectly, compared to Lars Ulrich’s slightly laid back drumming (laughs).

That example makes a lot of sense (laughs).

KOBAMETAL: That perfect balance is what makes Metallica what it is. For example, there are many guitarists that might be technically better than Kirk Hammett, but that’s irrelevant. There’s a certain “flavor” that only Metallica’s members are able to bring out.

That’s what it means to be a master, doesn’t it? And  yet, the interesting thing about Metallica is that they are always eager to take on new challenges, even if their fans don’t want them to. For example, they made a collaboration album with Lou Reed.

KOBAMETAL: They did indeed. In that regard, I think Metallica and Iron Maiden are polar opposites. Iron Maiden is a traditional British band that respects tradition. They’re like kintaro candy in a good way, always doing the same thing over and over again consistently.

(NOTE: Kintaro-candies are candy bars with the face of “Kintaro”, the main character of a Japanese folk tale. Kintaro’s face appears on the cut end of the candy bar when sliced, and always looks the same. As such, “Kintaro-ame” is normally used as an idiom to describe a person who is inflexible or lacks individuality. However, in this case, Koba is using it as a compliment to Iron Maiden’s ability to retain its principles regardless of experimenting with different styles. This video helps explain the expertise and work that goes into making each one)

―― IRON MAIDEN

Iron Maiden would never venture out into dangerous musical adventures, would they?

KOBAMETAL: I don’t think they would. I mean, they’re very clear and consistent; that’s certainly craftsmanship. And even when the phrases sound similar, they always come up with something different that feels like Iron Maiden. They really are the opposite of Metallica. As you mentioned earlier, Metallica feels more like a band that likes to challenge itself every time to do something new. The same can be said for the way they stage their live performances. I think this contrast can be seen even between legendary bands.

Metallica loves adventure, and there are always pros and cons to how far they take things, but they can always stand their ground and find the support of fans.

KOBAMETAL: Now it’s almost become each band’s specialty. It’s so like Metallica to always mess with something each time, whereas Iron Maiden never deviates.

They are both giants of metal, but they contrast strongly, don’t they? Whenever I interview KOBAMETAL, we always end up talking about metal trivia and veer off-topic (laughs). To get back on track, how does KOBAMETAL find information about various musical genres nowadays?

KOBAMETAL: Sometimes people tell me about new music, though normally it’s via places like YouTube or Spotify. Also, I get recommendations from record stores. However, it is getting increasingly difficult to encounter new music. Even when you try to search for it on your own, there are too many options. I don’t think it’s possible to go through all of it.

Rather, over the past decade, it seems more and more things have been tossed at you, like “How about this? Or how about that?”, testing to see what works?

KOBAMETAL: That’s part of it. However, whether or not we feel there’s something of substance is ultimately what matters.

In the end, that’s what’s important.

KOBAMETAL: If you don’t feel anything from it, that’s as far as it goes.

Final question! Following the Fox Day announcement on April 1, it seems that BABYMETAL is now going to start moving in various ways. Do you intend to continue mixing metal with other genres?

KOBAMETAL: Yes. I’ve spent nearly 10 years with the members to create BABYMETAL, and our attitude has always been one of constant evolution and challenge. That’s something we’d like to continue. I think that can sometimes be hard for fans to come to terms with, if BABYMETAL moves forward too quickly.

Indeed.

KOBAMETAL: I think there have been, and will continue to be times where people will wonder “What in the world is this?” And then, looking back, they can find out and understand what it was all about in hindsight.

I see. There will still be songs that leave fans puzzled, in a good way.

KOBAMETAL: Of course, we also love writing and playing straightforward metal songs, so those will always have a place in our lineup. However, when it comes to standard metal, there are so many great bands - legendary, even - that it might be better to defer to them instead. If BABYMETAL is going to create a song, our goal is to create metal that feels legendary, but with a different interpretation compared to that of existing legends. Ultimately, I think that’s what we’re going for. After all, our composition is different from that of other groups, both in terms of performers and music. And above all, BABYMETAL songs have the element of dance. These differences combine to give birth to something new. I wouldn’t say we’re trying to imitate a hardcore metal band or legendary metal band in any way. If that’s what you want, you might be better off listening to Metallica or Iron Maiden. BABYMETAL wants to create traditional metal, or legendary metal, in a way that only BABYMETAL could pull off. That’s what we want, I’d say.

After 10 years, BABYMETAL has reached metal enlightenment!

KOBAMETAL: No, no (laughs). Ultimately, there are things that only the members of BABYMETAL are able to express and pull off. This is true both in terms of music and performance. We’re more interested in creating metal that’s uniquely BABYMETAL. Of course, these songs can be enjoyed by hardcore metalheads, but we’d never rest on our laurels; it’s just who we are to continue to challenge ourselves in various ways. I’d consider it my mission to draw out the members’ talents, showcasing their skills one after another. I think that every time we release a new work, new expressions and new approaches will emerge, and I think that BABYMETAL will continue to grow as we take on whatever challenges lie ahead.

BABYMETAL will continue its “What the heck is this!?” approach.

KOBAMETAL: Yes, we will. I think that everyone, including the fans, myself, the members, and the staff remain excited about the project, eagerly anticipating what might happen next. I think it’s important for the members and everyone else involved to enjoy themselves in the process and have fun.
